The Routledge International Handbook of the Crimes of the Powerful

The Routledge International Handbook of the Crimes of the Powerful

Across the world most people are well aware of ordinary criminal harms to person and property. Often committed by the powerless and poor these individualized crimes are catalogued in the statistics collected annually by the FBI and by similar agencies in other developed nations. In contrast the more harmful and systemic forms of injury to person and property committed by powerful and wealthy individuals groups and national states are neither calculated by governmental agencies nor annually reported by the mass media. As a result most citizens of the world are unaware of the routinized crimes of the powerful even though they are more likely to experience harms and injuries from these types of organized offenses than they are from the atomized offenses of the powerless. Research on the crimes of the powerful brings together several areas of criminological focus involving organizational and institutional networks of powerful people that commit crimes against workers marketplaces taxpayers and political systems as well as acts of torture terrorism and genocide. This international handbook offers a comprehensive authoritative and structural synthesis of these interrelated topics of criminological concern. It also explains why the crimes of the powerful are so difficult to control. Edited by internationally acclaimed criminologist Gregg Barak this book reflects the state of the art of scholarly research covering all the key areas including corporate global environmental and state crimes. The handbook is a perfect resource for students and researchers engaged with explaining and controlling the crimes of the powerful domestically and internationally. | The Routledge International Handbook of the Crimes of the Powerful

Men Who Manage Fusions of Feeling and Theory in Administration

Men Who Manage Fusions of Feeling and Theory in Administration

This is a classic study of how managers interpret and engage problems as they are experienced and felt at various points and levels in factories and businesses. Melville Dalton drawing on ethnographic data examines both positive and negative interactions among managers between managers and between workers and managers and firms. He discusses the consequences for each group that result from their interactions. Where relevance and data allow Dalton relates his findings to the surrounding community. Dalton argues that the recurring problem areas in management grow out of six main areas: pressures for economy of operation; cooperation of officially powerless experts with their administrative superiors; local conflicts between union and management; uncertainty about the route to a place in middle and upper management; the task of recognizing and rewarding differential contributions; and the moral conflicts of the individual executive. Each of these six problem areas is made the subject of a chapter. What emerges is a study of compromises among key individuals and groups in business organizations and of the strictures on compromise. The book offers insights into how workplace rules in practice move from being sacred guides to flexible tools to balance company goals and personal ends. This volume includes a new introduction by David Shulman detailing the importance of this work more than forty years after its original publication. It is part of Transaction's Organization and Business series. | Men Who Manage Fusions of Feeling and Theory in Administration

Corrupt Capital Alcohol Nightlife and Crimes of the Powerful

Corrupt Capital Alcohol Nightlife and Crimes of the Powerful

This book offers a deep dive into the social political and economic forces that make white-collar crime and corruption a staple feature of the nightlife economy. The author a former bouncer-turned-bartender of party bars and nightclubs in a large U. S. city draws from an auto-ethnographic case study to describe and explain the routine and embedded nature of corruption and deviance among the regulators and the regulated in the nightlife environment. This text offers a contemporary and incisive theoretical framework on the criminogenic features and structural contradictions of capitalism. The author both describes and explains how the dominant political economy is rife with structural contradictions that in turn generate various manifestations of white-collar crime organizational deviance and public corruption. The author uses the bar and nightlife environment to empirically anchor these claims. Methodologically the research is innovative in advancing inquiry into ethically and logistically challenging environments. The style of writing and framing of the text is one that punches upward and avoids the voyeuristic and reductionist tropes historically associated with dangerous fieldwork. Through a range of disciplinary perspectives Corrupt Capital offers both scholarly rigor and inviting prose to advance our understanding of crimes of the relatively powerful and powerless alike. An accessible and compelling text this book will appeal to readers in criminology sociology law and society political science and all those interested in learning about the relationship between power law and routinized corruption in the nightlife economy. | Corrupt Capital Alcohol Nightlife and Crimes of the Powerful

Human Rights Human Wrongs In the Scale of Human Conscience

Human Rights Human Wrongs In the Scale of Human Conscience

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is the best gift of the United Nations and its main human rights organ the Human Rights Commission to “We the Peoples of the World”. But that powerful instrument is often rendered powerless by the behaviour of individuals running the institutions and the states arguably the most powerful institution conceptualised by human mind so far. In the process the UN comes under serious criticism and its most important organ which helped give the UDHR was dissolved for “failing to live up to its ideals”. Ironically the same states and their representatives most instrumental in creating the UN institutions including the Human Rights Commission first but later vilifying it and leading the campaign for its replacement by the Human Rights Council are now once again attacking it as “hypocritical and self-serving organisation that makes a mockery of human rights” and the most powerful member state feels compelled to walk out of the Council. Where does the world the UN and “we the peoples” stand in the search for greater freedom from want and fear better enjoyment of dignity and rights?Travelling through an extraordinary journey of life academic pursuits and expeditions of professional and diplomatic mountain climbing including the Chairmanship of the 56th Session of the UN Commission on Human Rights and its 5th Special Session on the Human Rights of the Palestinian People in the Occupied Palestine Territories Shambhu Ram Simkhada presents a scholarly diplomatic advocate and defender perspectives on the contemporary state of human rights and human wrongs in the scale of his own human conscience.
