Death Torture and the Broken Body in European Art 1300–1650

Death Torture and the Broken Body in European Art 1300–1650

Bodies mangled limbs broken skin flayed blood spilled: from paintings to prints to small sculptures the art of the late Middle Ages and early modern period gave rise to disturbing scenes of violence. Many of these torture scenes recall Christ’s Passion and its aftermath but the martyrdoms of saints stories of justice visited on the wicked and broadsheet reports of the atrocities of war provided fertile ground for scenes of the body’s desecration. Contributors to this volume interpret pain suffering and the desecration of the human form not simply as the passing fancies of a cadre of proto-sadists but also as serving larger social functions within European society. Taking advantage of the frameworks established by scholars such as Samuel Edgerton Mitchell Merback and Elaine Scarry (to name but a few) Death Torture and the Broken Body in European Art 1300-1650 provides an intriguing set of lenses through which to view such imagery and locate it within its wider social political and devotional contexts. Though the art works discussed are centuries old the topics of the essays resonate today as twenty-first-century Western society is still absorbed in thorny debates about the ethics and consequences of the use of force coercion (including torture) and execution and about whether it is ever fully acceptable to write social norms on the bodies of those who will not conform. | Death Torture and the Broken Body in European Art 1300–1650

Theoretical Foundations of Homeland Security Strategies Operations and Structures

Theoretical Foundations of Homeland Security Strategies Operations and Structures

This new textbook outlines the main theories and concepts from a variety of disciplines that support homeland security operations structures and strategies. Following the terrorist attacks of September 11th homeland security (HLS) grew in importance within the U. S. government (and around the world) and matured from a concept discussed among a relatively small cadre of policymakers and strategic thinkers to a broadly discussed issue in Congress and society with a growing academic presence. Yet the ability to discern a theory of homeland security that would support overall security strategy has been more elusive to both scholars and policymakers. This textbook aims to elucidate a grand theory of homeland security by leveraging the theoretical underpinnings of the disciplines that comprise the strategies operations and structures of the HLS enterprise. In this way each chapter contributes to a grand theory of homeland security as it explores a different discipline that influences or supports a domain of the homeland security enterprise. These chapters cover intelligence systems terrorism origins and ideologies emergency management environmental and human security cybersecurity policy crime and security global governance risk management public health law and policy technology interagency collaboration and the sociology of security. This book will be essential reading for students of Homeland Security and Emergency Response and recommended reading for students of terrorism intelligence cybersecurity risk management and national security. | Theoretical Foundations of Homeland Security Strategies Operations and Structures

Minority Student Retention The Best of the Journal of College Student Retention: Research Theory & Practice

Minority Student Retention The Best of the Journal of College Student Retention: Research Theory & Practice

Student retention continues to be a vexing problem for all colleges and universities. In spite of the money spent on creating programs and services to help retain students until they achieve their academic and personal goals and graduate the figures have not improved over time. This is particularly true for minority students who have a greater attrition rate than majority students. Demographic information shows that the minority population in the United States is growing at a faster rate than the majority. It is imperative that educational institutions find ways to help improve retention rates for all students but particularly minority students. Retention rates should not differ appreciably among different racial/ethnic groups. The Journal of College Student Retention: Research Theory and Practice is the only scholarly peer-reviewed journal devoted solely to college student retention. It has published many articles on minority student retention and this topic continues to garner much attention. This book is a compilation of the very best of these articles selected on the basis of reviews by a cadre of experts in the education field. The articles discuss African American Latino/Latina Asian and Asian Pacific Native American and biracial students and institutional commitments to retaining a diverse student population. For those interested in this vital area the collection will teach and inspire them to achieve greater heights and pay additional attention to retaining minority students in our colleges and universities. | Minority Student Retention The Best of the Journal of College Student Retention: Research Theory & Practice

Behaviorism

Behaviorism

Watson was the father of behaviorism. His now-revered lectures on the subject defined behaviorism as a natural science that takes the whole field of human adjustment as its own. It is the business of behaviorist psychology to predict and control human activity. The field has as its aim to be able given the stimulus to predict the response or seeing the reaction to know the stimulus that produced it. Watson argued that psychology is as good as its observations: what the organism does or says in the general environment. Watson identified laws of learning including frequency and recency. Kimble makes it perfectly clear that Watson's behaviorism while deeply indebted to Ivan Pavlov went beyond the Russian master in his treatment of cognition language and emotion. It becomes clear that Behaviorism is anything but the reductionist caricature it is often made out to be in the critical literature. For that reason alone the work merits a wide reading. Behaviorism as was typical of the psychology of the time offered a wide array of applications all of which can be said to fall on the enlightened side of the ledger. At a time of mixed messages Watson argued against child beating and abuse for patterns of enlightened techniques of factory management and for curing the sick and isolating the small cadre of criminals not subject to correction. And anticipating Thomas Szasz he argued against a doctrine of strictly mental diseases and for a close scrutiny of behavioral illness and disturbances. Kimble's brilliant introduction to Watson ends with a challenge to subjectivism to provide evidence that Watson's behaviorism cannot explain human actions without introspective notions of the mind. This genuine classic of social science hi our century remains relevant not just for the conduct of psychological research but for studies in the philosophy of science and the sociology of knowledge.

DHEA in Human Health and Aging

DHEA in Human Health and Aging

Reduced production of DHEA associated with the diseases that accompany aging has led to its use as a nutritional supplement for antiaging metabolic support and other purposes. While animal studies have clearly shown substantial benefits of DHEA in combating various disease states the effect of low levels of DHEA in humans is less established and the mechanisms of action and potential involvement in illnesses remain unclear. DHEA in Human Health and Aging reviews the past ten years of research into this hormone and explores its potential for future study. With contributions from a cadre of international experts this volume examines: The biology of DHEA relevant to health in humans Areas of potential clinical importance concerning low levels of DHEA related to age or physiological change Prevention as well as treatment of various human disease states by changing DHEA levels The use of DHEA levels in predicting the risk of disease The role of DHEA in diabetes fitness infectious disease cancer AIDS bone health cardiovascular diseases autism and mental health Animal models and their relation to studies done on humans The effects of loss of adrenal gland function the subsequent reduction in DHEA production and its replacement as therapy Adverse effects in DHEA-supplemented women Mechanisms of action of DHEA in prostate and ovarian health vascular modification stress memory aggression and Alzheimer’s disease Covering a wide range of topics the book is compiled from contributions of experts who have each studied some aspect of DHEA and human or animal health or disease. Every chapter is self-contained allowing for focused study on individual topics. Edited by one of the leading experts in the field of nutrition the book presents a compelling view of the state of the science in DHEA.

State-Led Privatization in China The Politics of Economic Reform

State-Led Privatization in China The Politics of Economic Reform

Large-scale privatization did not emerge spontaneously in China in the late 1990s. Rather the Chinese state led and carefully “planned” ownership transformation with timetables and measurable privatization quotas not for the purpose of extracting the state from the economy but in order to strengthen the rule of the Party. While it is widely believed that authoritarian regimes are better suited than democracies to carry out economic reform this book provides a more nuanced understanding of reform in China demonstrating that the Chinese state’s capacity to impose unpopular reform is contingent on its control over local state agents and its adaptability to societal demands. Building on rich fieldwork data gathered in three Chinese cities (Shenyang Shanghai and Xiamen) this book offers the first comparative study of China’s privatization processes at the local level. Instead of focusing solely on political elites Jin Zeng adopts a multi-level interaction approach to examine how the complex interplay of the central leadership grassroots officials and state-owned enterprise managers and workers shaped the contour of privatization in China. The book advances three central arguments. First local economic structure and cadre evaluation system mediated local officials’ incentives to initiate privatization. Second local officials relied on mobilization campaigns and various appeasement measures to implement privatization. Finally the dynamics of privatization were fundamentally driven by the central government’s reactions to social opposition and by the subsequent responses of local officials to the changed political-regulatory environment. As a detailed analysis of the dual transformation of the property regime and state–society relations in China this book will be invaluable to students and scholars of Chinese politics economic reform as well as those interested in comparative political economy and economic development more broadly. | State-Led Privatization in China The Politics of Economic Reform

Riding the Academic Freedom Train A Culturally Responsive Multigenerational Mentoring Model

Riding the Academic Freedom Train A Culturally Responsive Multigenerational Mentoring Model

Mentoring demonstrably increases the retention of undergraduate and graduate students and is moreover invaluable in shaping and nurturing academic careers. With the increasing diversification of the student body and of faculty ranks there’s a clear need for culturally responsive mentoring across these dimensions. Recognizing the low priority that academia has generally given to extending the practice of mentoring – let alone providing mentoring for Black indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) and first generation students – this book offers a proven and holistic model of mentoring practice developed in the field of psychology that not only helps mentees navigate their studies and the academy but provides them with an understanding of the systemic and racist barriers they will encounter validates their cultural roots and contributions and attends to their personal development. Further recognizing the demands that mentoring places on already busy faculty the model addresses ways of distributing the work inviting White and BIPOC faculty to participate developing mentees’ capacities to mentor those that follow them building a network of mentoring across generations and adopting group mentoring. Intentionally planned and implemented the model becomes self-perpetuating building an intergenerational cadre of mentors who can meet the growing and continuing needs of the BIPOC community. Opening with a review of the salient research on effective mentoring and chapters that offer minority students’ views on what has worked for them as well as reflections by faculty mentors the core of the book describes the Freedom Train model developed by the godfather of Black psychology Dr. Joseph White setting out the principles and processes that inform the Multiracial / Multiethnic / Multicultural (M3) Mentoring Model that evolved from it and offers an example of group mentoring. While addressed principally to faculty interested in undertaking mentoring and supporting minoritized students and faculty the book also addresses Deans and Chairs and how they can create Freedom Train communities and networks by changing the cultural climate of their institutions providing support and modifying faculty evaluations and rewards that will in turn contribute to student retention as well as creative and productive scholarship and research. This is a timely and inspiring book for anyone in the academy concerned with the success of BIPOC students and invigorating their department’s or school’s scholarship. | Riding the Academic Freedom Train A Culturally Responsive Multigenerational Mentoring Model

Tailings Dam Design / Conception des Barrages de Stériles Miniers Technology Update / Mise à Jour des Technologies

Tailings Dam Design / Conception des Barrages de Stériles Miniers Technology Update / Mise à Jour des Technologies

Tailings are produced from the processing of mineral ores and are commonly stored within embankment dams. The design of the dams requires application of sound engineering principles and an understanding of the properties of the tailings. This Bulletin provides a framework for classifying different types of tailings ranging from ultra-fine to coarse based on their geotechnical properties and provides typical geotechnical parameters for the different tailings types. Technologies for dewatering tailings to reduce the risk of storage continue to be developed and the different technologies from thickening to filtration and re-application of old technologies are presented to illustrate the options available and where appropriate typical in situ properties. This bulletin is directed towards a wide audience of stakeholders: designers owners regulators communities and various organizations and provides a reference for communicating tailings properties and the benefits and limitations of technologies. All mining operations and thereby tailings operations are unique. There is no one-solution-fits-all. Tailings dam designs need to account for site-specific conditions such as climate physiography geochemistry geomorphology seismology mining processes environment and community setting with the application of technologies playing an important role in developing safe sustainable tailings facilities.
