Los Colores de Fiesta was commissioned by the Pride of San Antonio Show Band to celebrate the year-long 300th Anniversary Fiesta of the city in 2018. As a former member of the South San Antonio and John Jay High School Bands, and later with the 5th Army Band, composer Charles Booker marched in the Fiesta Flambeau Parade, America's largest illuminated night parade and the highlight of Fiesta. This rhapsodic work celebrates the exciting atmosphere of Fiesta, as well as the rich and diverse cultures it represents.

Messe de Requiem : Op. 54

Saint-Saëns’ colorful Messe de Requiem op. 54, originally opulently scored, is published here in an ingenious reduced version, so that smaller choirs, and choirs with more limited resources of space or finance can also perform this attractive work with smaller instrumental forces. The original large forces – quadruple wind and brass and four harps – may have been a reason why the expressive and richly colored work was less well-known than the composer’s Oratorio de Noël (Carus 40.455), a popular work the world over. To expand the options for performance, Carus has therefore published two versions of the Messe de Requiem – the original version, whose material has been arranged in such a way that the work can alternatively be performed with 11 instead of 20 wind and brass instruments (Carus 27.317), and a version without any wind or brass, scored just for strings, one or two harps, and organ. These versions are based on an arrangement published by Durand in 1927, and newly adapted by Klaus Rothaupt. The organ is allocated sections of the original wind and brass parts; registration details will help rehearsing. The vocal and string parts are unaltered compared with the original composition, so the vocal and choral score of the original version can also be used for this version. This is a fine-sounding, distinctive setting of the Requiem Mass which is undoubtedly one of the composer’s most important works.

The Red Tower : Based on the painting by Giorgio de Chirico (1888-

The 2nd movement of The Venetian Collection refers to a painting by the Italian artist Giorgio de Chirico, and was commissioned by the Banda Civica di Soncino [Italy]. One of the main towers of the ancient walls that surround themedieval town of Soncino, La rocca sforzesca, has a significant resemblance with the tower on De Chirico's painting. De Meij has constructed an exciting and warm-blooded work, based on a simple four-note motif, with lyric solopassages for bassoon, bass clarinet and soprano saxophone in the middle section. In November of 2000, THE RED TOWER was awarded 1st Prize in the International Composition Competition of OMAN. (Duration 8:30)

Consolations, Grand solo de concert and Other Work : Suppl. 10

Of the early versions of works included in this volume the first versions of the notably popular Consolations cycle and Grand solo de concert (published in 1850) are of particular interest. In the first version of Consolations the third movement was a style hongrois piece whose thematic material was later used by Liszt in his Hungarian Rhapsody No. 1 (published in 1851). The first version of Grand solo de concert shows that the work did not originally include a slow middle section to be recapitulated towards the end as seen in the final version. This is a characteristically Lisztian feature that would reappear a few years later in his Sonata in B minor.

Sir Roger De Coverley (Concert Band Score And Parts)

Frank Bridge (1879 – 1941) was one of the leading English composers of his time. In October 1922 he adapted his popular string quartet Sir Roger de Coverley for full symphony orchestra and Sir Henry Wood agreed, at the last minute, to include it in the last night of the Queen’s Hall Promenade Concerts at the end of that month. This elaborate and colourful orchestral version has never been widely performed, but has now been brilliantly transcribed by Alastair Wheeler to provide a miniature dance poem for grade 5 level concert band. Bridge’s lively treatment of one of England’s most famous traditional dance melodies will make a fitting end to any concert, with the strains of Auld Lang Syne introduced by Bridge as a nod towards Sir Roger de Coverley’s traditional function as the final dance of a Christmas Ball, as it was in Old Mr. Fezziwig’s party in Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

Angela Ciampani/Jacob De Haan: Agosto (Score/Parts)

The main theme of this composition was created on a clear, starry night on the 10th of August. While writing it, the Italian composer Angela Ciampani was inspired by her son Lorenzo and the sight of stars over the green hills of Umbria. Initially, it was a short solo for Trumpet and Piano: subsequently, Jacob de Haan extended and rewrote the composition for Euphonium solo and band. This arrangement was created for the celebration of the 170th and 20th anniversaries, respectively, of the concert bands of Monteleone d'Orvieto and Città della Pieve.

Fostedina : De Sage van de Gouden Kap

The legend of ‘Fostedina and the golden hood’ is about the imprisonment of archbishop Willibrord (658-739), ‘Apostle to the Frisians’, and several dozen Danes converted to Christianity. The young woman Fostedina took pity on them and liberated them. As a punishment, she had to stand the entire day in the market square with a crown of thorns on her head. The thorns left severe scars, but on her wedding day she was given a golden cap that covered her scars: the later ear iron.

“The idea behind this song is to remind everyone, for all those who have forgotten, how colourful and exciting Christmas was during their childhood. Christmas is a magical time and, after all, no matter how old we are, we are all still children at heart.” These words were written by Chris de Burgh about his 2009 hit, The Bells of Christmas, inspired by Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Simon Fahnholz has now made an excellent version of this Christmas hit for concert band.
