Angelo Maria Fiore (c. 1660-1723), composer and virtuoso cellist, was the founder of the Piedmont school. In 1697 he was invited to the Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna as a rare cello player. During his lifetime his work entitled Trattenimenti di camera a due stromenti, violino e cimbalo o violino e violoncello was published by Bartolomeo Gregori in 1698, barely three years after the first cello sonatas to appear in print, the works of Giuseppe Jacchini. Three of the 14 Trattenimenti were written for cello and basso continuo, they form the contents of this volume. This edition is faithful to the text of the source, the archaic style of writing has been modernized, to make thescore, intended for practical (mainly pedagogical) purposes, easier to read.

''The four parts of the piece originate from the piano cycles of Johannes Brahms. The identical nature of the themes is implied in their descending direction, while their differences lie in their distinct meters, key signatures and tempo. I further developed the differences through the use of different musical alterations (of melody, rhythm and timbre) while the melodic contours are always constant. The six-movement composition written in 1959 is Kurtág's opus no. 1. It emerged after the composer's study tour to Paris which brought about his rethinking of the process of composition and the discarding of his earlier written works and meant at the same time the beginning of the composer's creative period which has lasted ever since.

The latest work by András Sz ll sy, who celebrated his 80th birthday last year, was given its first performance in May 2002 by the Addio chamber orchestra, within the framework of the contemporary music festival Concert cycle 2002, from the music of the 20th and 21st centuries. This piece belongs to the most characteristic category of works in Sz ll sy's oeuvre, that of memorial compositions. A twelve-tone series and variations on it determine the organization of the notes, and the composer moulds the series into melodies of Bach-like beauty.
