Manuel De Falla: El Retablo De Maese Pedro (Study Score)

Regarded as the greatest Spanish composer of the 20th century, Manuel De Falla (1876-1946) had a distinctive nationalistic style. His 1923 puppet opera El Retablo De Maese Pedro marks the point at which he broadens his influences away from Andalusian music, and finds inspiration from other Spanish folk genres. His “Play within a Play” sets a scene from Don Quixote which is actually about a puppet theatre. Scored for Treble, Tenor, Baritone, and Chamber Orchestra, this 30-minute opera was immediately praised by the musical establishment of the time, and paved the way for De Falla to achieve global recognition.

The first performance took place on 7th November 2002 by Taina Piira (Soprano), Gerald Finley (Baritone) and the Royal Stockholm Philarmonic Orchestra conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen.

Michael Nyman: Anne De Lucy Songs

Commissioned by and written for Nicola Walker Smith in October 1992, this set of songs takes as its starting point material from The Upside-Down Violin at Expo ?92 in Seville by The Michael Nyman Band and the Orquestra Andalusi de Tetuoan. The Moroccan orchestra plays only monophonically and consequently I wrote a ?pure? melody line - that is, one not built on harmony. The harmonic content of Anne de Lucy Songs is thus derived from the melody for the first time in my work. The text is an ode to the great Renaissance theorist and musical speculator Salinas by Fray Luis de Leon.

La Passion De Simone is an opera composed by Kaija Saariaho for Soprano Solo, Chorus and Chamber Orchestra. With a libretto by Amin Maalouf, this is the Full Score. A full performance of this would last for around 75 minutes. La Passion De Simone  was commissioned jointly by the Vienna Festival, Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Barbican London and Lincoln Center New York. It had its world premiere on 26th November 2006 in Vienna as part of the New Crowned Hope Festival.

De Falla: Homenaje: Le Tombeau De Claude Debussy

In 1920, a Parisian magazine asked several leading composers to compose musical tributes to the famous French musician Claude Debussy, who had died in 1918. The great Spanish composer Manuel De Falla (1876-1946) was one of them: having met Debussy in Paris, he had been heavily influenced by the French impressionists. His Homenaje (Homage) was his only work for solo Guitar, although it was arranged by the composer for solo Piano almost immediately. It is widely regarded as one of the masterpieces of early 20th century music – at only three minutes in length, it is often said it has twenty minutes’ worth of music contained within it.
