National Role Conceptions in a New Millennium Defining a Place in a Changing World

National Role Conceptions in a New Millennium Defining a Place in a Changing World

National Role Conceptions in a New Millennium examines the transformation of the international system through an examination of the role conceptions adopted by the different global actors. Advancing current role theory scholarship in International Relations the contributors take as their starting point the question of how international actors are responding to the reordering of the global system. They reflect on the rise of new actors and the reemergence of old rivalries the decline of established norms and the unleashing of internal political forces such as nationalism and parochialism. They argue that changes in the international system can impact how states define their roles and act as a variable in both domestic and international role contestations. Further they examine the redefinition of roles of countries and the international organizations that have been central to the US and western dominated world order including major powers in the world (the US Russia China Britain etc. ) as well as the European Union NATO and ASEAN. By looking at international organizations this text moves beyond the traditional subjects of role theory in the study of international relations to examine how roles are contested in non-state actors. National Role Conceptions in a New Millennium is the first attempt to delve into the individual motivations of states to seek role transition. As such it is ideal for those teaching and studying both theory and method in international relations and foreign policy analysis. | National Role Conceptions in a New Millennium Defining a Place in a Changing World

Supply in a Market Economy

Supply in a Market Economy

Originally published in 1976 Supply in a Market Economy was a new kind of introductory micro-economics text which both assesses the usefulness of traditional theory in tackling social and economic problems and compares and contrasts the alternative approaches to the practical problems inherent in the allocation of scarce resources. Richard Jones has succeeded in bringing together the most useful features of a standard microeconomics theory book with empirical and applied material more usually dealt with separately in second year surveys of industrial organisation. The book gives full coverage to the standard theories of the firm of production of cost and scale and of location to recent critiques of these theories and to alternative approaches now being proposed. Integrated into this theoretical background is a clear analysis of the relationship of these theories to market structures and the economics of industry and a ‘real-world’ examination of markets in action – with individual sections on the control of rents on the water supply industry on the effect of taxation on commodities and on the economics of crime and its prevention. Supply in a Market Economy would prove to be an invaluable new course-book for first and second year students of microeconomics at the time and particularly for those non-specialists who were impatient to see the relevance and applications of traditional theory to real problems. Now it can be read in its historical context.

Policy Discourses in Malaysian Education A nation in the making

Policy Discourses in Malaysian Education A nation in the making

Since independence in 1957 Malaysia has become a globally-recognised industrial trading partner. With a 60% Muslim population it also enjoys the reputation of being a moderate and peaceful nation. However with just a short time left to realising its Vision 2020 of developed nationhood the pathway of nation building still seems ambiguous. There is a brewing tension in its race and ethnic relations which has permeated the various fronts namely politics society economics and education. This book analyses the education policies that have been formulated and implemented in Malaysia since independence. It demonstrates how these policy enactments have influenced the nation’s growth and transformation and the challenges faced in creating a model of equity and multicultural co-existence among its racially and ethnically diversified people. Shedding light on these issues it points towards the major mending that is needed for Malaysia to become a truly developed nation. Chapters include: Education of ethnic minorities in Malaysia: Contesting issues in a multiethnic society Access and equity issues in Malaysian higher education Graduate employability in government discourse: A critical perspective This comprehensive book is a case study on Malaysia that will supplement researchers and advance students in their understanding of a multi-racial society’s perspective and attitude towards education. | Policy Discourses in Malaysian Education A nation in the making

Education in a Federal UK

Education in a Federal UK

Britain’s two recent referenda - on Brexit (2016) and on Scottish independence (2014) - have raised in the public mind fundamental questions about the future of the UK. It seems that for the first time the public the media and the political elite have woken up to the fact that in different parts of the UK there are different histories different aspirations and different imagined futures in relation to a whole range of vitally important political issues. But what the public debate often fails to recognise is that in many areas of public life – perhaps especially education – the UK is already a federal state and in key respects has been so for many years. The aim of this volume is therefore to take stock: to try and capture what the current state of educational policy and practice is across the whole of the UK. This has been achieved by commissioning two different papers from each of the four countries – Wales Scotland Northern Ireland and England. The first is an overview exploring the distinctive history principles and current policies of each country. The second paper has been specifically chosen as a case study of a key policy that highlights the distinctiveness of each country – the Foundation Phase for Wales assessment policy in Scotland ‘shared education’ initiatives in Northern Ireland and higher education policy in England. Taken together these eight papers give an important insight into the complexities of educational policy and practice across the whole of the UK today. This volume was originally published as a special issue of Oxford Review of Education. | Education in a Federal UK
