Tilia ’Pallida’ is a fast growing, deciduous tree which establishes quickly. Tilia europaea is a hybrid which occurs naturally from parent plants Tilia Cordata (Small-Leaved Lime) and Tilia Platyphyllos (Large-Leaved Lime). The Magnolia Grandiflora is a plant that is native to the Southern U.S states, ranging from Southeastern North Carolina, Central Florida and all the way to East Texas. The plant itself is very popular along traditional culture and as late as 2018, an iconic Southern Magnolia planted 200 years ago by President Andrew Jackson finally reached maturity. Magnolia Grandiflora typically has a single stem (or trunk) and a pyramidal shape. The leaves are simple and broadly ovate, 12–20 cm long and 6–12 cm broad, with smooth margins. They are dark green, stiff and leathery, and often scurfy underneath with yellow-brown pubescence. The large, showy, lemon citronella-scented flowers are white, up to 30 cm across and fragrant, with six to 12 petals with a waxy texture, emerging from the tips of twigs on mature trees in late spring. This plant’s genus name Liquidambar was first given by Linnaeus in 1753 from liquidus, fluid, and the Arabic ambar, amber, in allusion to the fragrant terebinthine juice or gum which exudes from the tree. Its specific epithet styraciflua is an old generic name meaning “flowing with storax” (a plant resin). The name “storax” has long been confusingly applied to the aromatic gum or resin of this species, that of L. orientalis of Turkey, and to the resin better known as benzoin from various tropical trees in the genus Styrax.The sweetgum has a Nahuatl name, Ocotzocuahuitl, which translates to tree that gives pine resin from ocotl (pine), tzotl (resin), cuahuitl (tree), which refers to the use of the tree’s resin.The common name “sweet gum” refers to the species’ “sweetish gum”, contrasting with the black gum (Nyssa sylvatica), only distantly related, with which the sweet gum overlaps broadly in range. The Elaeagnus x Ebbingei is a plant that is an evergreen shrub. The history of the plant is that it is a hybrid first discovered by Dutch horticulturalist, Simon Doorenbos, in 1929. He sowed the seed from several Elaeagnus species growing next to each other, thus giving birth to this plant. This variant is a Standard Espalier Plant. The plant starts to flower in Autumn producing lovely white flowers and by winter time produces several small orange fruits. It has a H5 rating in terms of hardiness and is therefore great for the British climate although it is advised to shelter them during extreme cold snaps, especially in Scotland. The soil needs to be well drained with some moisture permitted. The plant itself is generally free of pests but be wary of the elaeagnus sucker which could be problematic for this plant. Commonly called the Holly Oak tree, Quercus Ilex often live for more than a thousand years. They are large evergreens with very dense crowns of leaves. They have strong polymorphic leaf of 2 - 9cm long; the younger leaves are wider and have toothed, sharp margins. The colour and texture of the Quercus Ilex varies from hairy, tender and pale green when they first appear to a leathery, dark green, covered in soft white hairs on the underside, when adult. Both male and female flowers are borne on catkins and appear in June, the first ones being the most decorative as they are a soft yellow. Grows in poor soil, but prefers calcareous, and does not like clay. Will withstand a lack of water in hot, dry summers and tolerates any kind of pruning. The Platanus x Acerifolia, also more commonly known as the London Plane, is the same plant as the Hispanica. This plant is in our Standard Espalier Style design. It has a rather interesting history. The actual plant species was formed by accidental hybridisation due to the close proximity of P. Orientalis and P. Occidentalis. It is said to have happened in Spain during the mid 17th century but there are beliefs that state it happened in Vauxhall Gardens in London where John Tradescant the Younger discovered the tree. The actual plant itself has an inconspicuous flower but starts to grow fruit in the winter time. Well drained soil is recommended for this plant and make sure to avoid planting in the vicinity of other buildings.
