The Routledge Companion to Alternative Organization

The Routledge Companion to Alternative Organization

Despite the Great Recession slightly different forms of global capitalism are still portrayed as the only game in town by the vast majority of people in power in the world today. Unbridled growth trade liberalisation and competition are advocated as the only or best ways of organizing the contemporary world. Unemployment yawning gaps between rich and poor political disengagement and environmental devastation are too often seen as acceptable ‘side effects’ of the dominance of neo-liberalism. But the reality is that capitalism has always been contested and that people have created many other ways of providing for themselves. This book explores economic and organizational possibilities which extend far beyond the narrow imagination of economists and management theorists. Chapters on co-operatives community currencies the transition movement scrounging co-housing and much more paints a rich picture of the ways in which another word is not only possible but already taking shape. The aim of this companion is to move beyond complaining about the present and into exploring this diversity of organisational possibilities. Our starting point is a critical analysis of contemporary global capitalism is merely the opening for thinking about organizing as a form of politics by other means and one that can be driven by the values of solidarity freedom and responsibility. This comprehensive companion with an international cast of contributors gives voice to forms of organizing which remain unrepresented or marginalised in organizational studies and conventional politics yet which offer more promising grounds for social and environmental justice. It is a valuable resource for students activists and researchers interested in alternative approaches to economy and society in a variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary fields. | The Routledge Companion to Alternative Organization

Alternative Educational Programmes Schools and Social Justice

Alternative Educational Programmes Schools and Social Justice

Alternative education caters and cares for students whose regular schools have failed and excluded them. Fifty years of international research reports that alternative settings are characterised by close and powerful staff–student relationships a curriculum which is relevant engaging and meaningful and the strong sense of agency afforded young people by the opportunity to make decisions. Together these three practices produce increased life chances for alternative education participants. However despite these apparent successes alternative education seems to have had little impact on mainstream schools. This collection of papers addresses the important question – what might regular schools and teachers learn about socially just pedagogies from alternative education practices? In providing answers to this question authors interrogate the taken-for-granted wisdom about alternative education while also taking account of ongoing policy shifts differing locations and populations and persistent and intersecting patterns of raced classed and gendered inequalities. They draw on a range of theoretical and methodological approaches to interrogate the ways in which alternative schools and alternative education both challenge and legitimate the kinds of schooling most of us expect for our own and other people's children. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Critical Studies in Education. | Alternative Educational Programmes Schools and Social Justice

Integral Community Enterprise in Africa Communitalism as an Alternative to Capitalism

Integral Community Enterprise in Africa Communitalism as an Alternative to Capitalism

At a time of global economic crisis and disillusionment with capitalism Adodo offers refreshing and positive insight into a more integral way of business management enterprise and community development as well as holistic healing in Africa. For over three decades Africa was the recipient of billions of dollars in aid funds that were meant to catapult the continent from undeveloped to developed status. Yet the more the aid poured in the poorer African countries became. The devastating effect of western economic models in Africa that followed is well documented. Integral Community Enterprise in Africa exposes the limitations of existing theories such as capitalism socialism and communism and shows how western theories were imposed on Africa. Such imposition of concepts and ideas is not only demeaning but also unsustainable serving only the interest of the elite. Father Anselm Adodo argues for the need to have a southern theory to serve as an alternative to western theories. The majority of African intellectuals and activists while criticizing existing theories often do not provide alternative theories to address the prevalent inadequacies entrenched in conventional social political and economic systems. This revolutionary book aims to address this lapse and proposes the theory of communitalism as a more indigenous sustainable and integral approach to tackling the social political economic and developmental challenges of today’s Africa. There is an African alternative to capitalism socialism and communism – a surer path to sustainable development in and from Africa. This is a book that is positioned at the very core of a much needed African Renaissance. A profoundly new approach to development in Africa this is essential reading for anyone concerned with authentic development in Africa and in the world. | Integral Community Enterprise in Africa Communitalism as an Alternative to Capitalism
