Alcohol is massively associated with crime. Evidence from the British Medical Association found that alcohol use is associated with 60-70 per cent of murders 70 per cent of stabbings 50 per cent of fights or assaults in the home. For non-violent offences the association is very strong as well: 88 per cent of those arrested for criminal damage 83 per cent for breach of the peace 41 per cent for theft and 26 per cent for burglary had drunk in the four hours prior to their arrest. At the same time there has been intense concern about public drunkenness in town and city centres especially on the part of young people and the cost and damage this causes. This book seeks to understand the nature of the connection between alcohol and crime and the way the criminal justice system responds to the problem providing a clear and accessible account and analysis of the subject. Professor Jean Richard is the doyen of crusade historians. Although also well-known as one of the most distinguished historians of Burgundy he has through publications which have been appearing for over half a century established himself as the greatest living scholar working on crusading and the Latin East. His book on twelfth-century Tripoli published in 1945 is still the standard work on the county. In the 1950s he and Joshua Prawer provided a revolutionary approach towards the constitution and institutions of the kingdom of Jerusalem. He went on to pave the way for an entirely new understanding of the kingdom of Cyprus. In the 1960s he was one of a few historians who were sign-posting a more empathetic view of the ideology of crusading and the motivation of crusaders and he developed his ideas further in recent monographs on Saint Louis and on the crusades in general. His work on Catholic missions to Asia and the role of the papacy in those enterprises is generally regarded as setting standards which few can approach. To celebrate his eightieth birthday thirty-nine colleagues have contributed articles in fields which themselves illustrate Professor Richard’s breadth of interest: the crusades the military orders and the Latin settlements on the Levantine mainland and the island of Cyprus.

Nutrients Valorisation via Duckweed-based Wastewater Treatment and Aquaculture

Development of a sustainable wastewater treatment scheme to recycle sewage nutrients and water in tilapia aquaculture was the main objective of this PhD research. Use of an integrated UASB-duckweed ponds system for domestic wastewater treatment linked to tilapia aquaculture was investigated. The treatment system was efficient in organic matter removal during the entire year while nitrogen phosphorus and faecal coliform removal were negatively affected by the decline in temperature in winter. Most of the nitrogen removal was achieved by plant uptake (81 per cent) while 14.5 per cent and 4.5 per cent of the removal was due to denitrification and sedimentation respectively. The treatment system provided effluent quality and duckweed biomass suitable to reuse in tilapia aquaculture. The nutritional value of fresh duckweed was significantly better than for wheat bran and simular to the commecial feed when used in combination with treated sewage from the duckweed ponds. This research was carried out with financial support of the Dutch government within the framework of the SAIL funded "Wasteval" project (LUW/MEA/971).

Language comprises a major mark of humans compared with other primates and is the main vehicle for social interaction. A major characteristic of any natural language is that the same communication idea or intention can be articulated in different ways—in other words the same message can be "framed" differently.
