Published by Edition Synapse Japan and distributed by Routledge outside of Japan. This is the very first collection of all the English works produced by an author renowned for her autobiographical novel A Daughter of the Samurai which became a bestseller in pre-war America. Etsu Inagaki Sugimoto was born 1874 in the province of Niigata in Japan and after attending a Methodist school in Tokyo she moved to the USA for a pre-arranged marriage to a Japanese merchant in Cincinnati. After her husband’s death she started writing about Japan in local newspapers and then in a series of articles for the magazine Asia. A Daughter of Samurai which was her first book and was based on the magazine series was published by Doubleday a leading US publisher. The book became one of the publisher’s biggest sellers and continued to be in print for many editions. A British edition was produced as were translations into most other major Western languages. The book’s influence has been profound. For example Ruth Benedict’s The Chrysanthemum and the Sword one the most widely read books on Japan in the West is deeply indebted to Sugimoto’s novel. Sugimoto later lived in New York and taught Japanese language and culture at Columbia University. In addition to her first novel she published three other novels and a children’s book all in English. Even in the anti-Japanese atmosphere of pre-war America and Britain they were favourably reviewed on the both sides of the Atlantic. Reviews of her work appeared in the New York Times and the Times Literary Supplement. This Collected English Works of Etsu Inagaki Sugimoto includes all of those books as facsimile reprints of first editions together with colour plates and illustrations. The collection also gathers her newspaper and magazine articles. Selected reviews of her novels are also included. … Neither Americans nor Japanese they felt alien in both countries winning a sort of spiritual hybridism which is one of the tragedies of abi-racial background. The story takes root from this tragedy and serves as a commentary upon the life of both nations. In every sense A Daughter of the Samurai is an attempt to explain the life of the Samurai to the American people. "Unless the red barbarians and the children of the gods" she writes "learn each other’s hearts the ships may sail and sail but the two lands will never be nearer." At a time when a wholesome piece of American legislation was marred with ill manners toward the proud and sensitive nation of Japan and when American jin goes invoke a Yellow Peril analogous to Japan’s White Peril such a book is useful and honorable. The Works of William H. Beveridge

William Beveridge (1879-1963) was a key figure in the modernization of British economic and social policy who published widely on unemployment and social security. Among his most notable works and reprinted in this set are Full Employment in a Free Society (1944) and Pillars of Security (1943). Beveridge’s Report on social insurance was published in 1942. It proposed that all people of working age should pay a weekly national insurance contribution. In return benefits would be paid to people who were sick unemployed retired or widowed. Beveridge included as one of three fundamental assumptions the fact that there would be a National Health Service of some sort. Beveridge's arguments were widely accepted. He argued that welfare institutions would increase the competitiveness of British industry in the post-war period not only by shifting labour costs like healthcare and pensions onto the public account but also by producing healthier wealthier and more productive workers. Beveridge saw full employment as the pivot of the social welfare programme he expressed in the 1942 report. As well as making available some of Beveridge’s key and in some case lesser known works this set includes as its final volume an indispensable overview of Beveridge and his prolific work.

With over half the world’s population now living in cities urbanization is one of the defining features of the contemporary world and urban history – the study of the processes and consequences of urbanization – is one of the most dynamic fields of modern and contemporary history. But the dynamism of urban history is not confined to the modern era and the study of urban societies in the less recent past equally represents a highly fertile field of scholarship. This collection will provide an expert overview of the field of urban history and a representative synthesis of past and current scholarship in urban history. The articles selected will explore key debates and conceptual issues in urban history from a global perspective highlighting the benefits of comparative historical research and of interdisciplinary approaches drawn from the humanities and social sciences . The recent expansion of global history and transnational perspectives in historical research is particularly suited to the study of urban history given the importance of cities as nodal points in the networks of global exchange and communication and this volume. The widespread academic study of educational technology blossomed in the years following the development of the microprocessor. Of course that is not to say that education was technology-free before the 1970s: the telephone wireless radio cinema television and mainframe computers had all in their time been heralded as educational marvels. But the scale of change and the academic practices that responded to it became of an entirely different order with the arrival of personal computers promising as they did access for ordinary people to cheaper faster and smarter benefits of science and technology. From that historic moment onwards it was increasingly common to hear educationalists computer experts journalists and politicians proclaiming that these new technologies would transform the world of education for better or for worse.
