Aucuba japonica Crotonifolia 60cm 10L

Aucuba are easy to grow, will tolerate pretty much any soil that is moist but well-drained, can be grown in sun or full shade and are suitable for urban and coastal locations. During the first year water thoroughly once a week, allowing the soil to dry out between watering, decreasing to every other week once established. As it has a fairly slow growth rate pruning is not necessary on a regular basis, but can be done in early spring before the new growth arrives. Generally feeding is not required in the garden, but container grown plants can be fed once a month during spring and summer with a general-purpose, water-soluble fertiliser. Requires a male form to produce red berries in summer.

Cordyline Australis 10L (80-100cm)

Cordylines are fairly easy to grow, will tolerate most soil types that are moist but well-drained, can be grown in full sun or partial shade and require a sheltered location. During the first year give it a good water once a week during drier spells, but once established it is fairly drought tolerant, although container grown plants will still require watering. Regular pruning is not required but dead leaves should be cut back as close to the main trunk as possible. If your plant is old enough to produce flowers these can be cut right back when they have died. Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced, liquid fertiliser. This variety is not winter hardy variety so prevent damage by tying up the foliage to reduce wind damage to the leaves and prevent water collecting around growing points which can cause rotting. Wrap the trunk with layers of fleece and place a 15cm (6in) layer of mulch, such as bark, over the root area.

Fatsia tolerate most soil types that are moist but well-drained and can be grown in dappled or full shade, but prefer a sheltered position away from cold winds. During the first year give it a good water once a week, but once established it should be fairly self sufficient unless grown in a container. Fatsia are fairly fast growing so can be trimmed in spring and summer to control their size. A general slow-release shrub fertiliser can be applied in the spring to promote healthy growth.

Eucalyptus are easy to grow provided you give them a sunny, but sheltered position in a moist, but well-drained soil. Water well during the first season, especially if planted in a container. Eucalyptus don’t usually require any fertiliser if planted in the garden, but you may want to add some slow release fertiliser in spring or summer if planted in a container. Pruning can be done to maintain shape, encourage more bushy growth or corrective pruning for badly placed or unstable branches. Most pruning should ideally be done in March/April, but light summer pruning can be done to maintain size/shape. Autumn and winter pruning should be avoided.

Japanese Acers require a sheltered position in partial shade, planting in full sun will cause the leaves to scorch. A position with morning sun and afternoon shade is perfect. They grow well in most soils except very dry, waterlogged or alkaline conditions. Water regularly during the first season. If planting in a container more regular watering will be required – this could be at least once a day in hot weather. Add a layer of composted mulch to the surrounding area after planting and each year in spring. Mulching protects the roots from the heat in summer, the cold in winter and reduces the frequency of watering. Be careful not to mulch too close to the stem as it could cause rotting. Trimming to remove dead or crossing branches and to maintain shape should be done when the Acer is dormant (November to early February). Make sure to prune back to a bud – this means cutting just above the bud. If you leave any excess wood above the bud, the dieback could become diseased.
