Bay Trees can be planted in most fertile, well-drained soil and prefer a sheltered position in sun or partial shade. They will not perform well in heavy clay soils unless the soil is improved with extra sand and grit. Achillea are easy to grow and will do well in a sunny position in most well-drained soils, but will not tolerate waterlogged conditions. Water at least once a week during summer months until established, but keep watering in winter to a minimum. Once established Achillea are fairly drought tolerant. Remove spent flowers during the season to encourage more to grow. After flowering is complete, and autumn turns to winter, Achillea should be cut back to ground level preferably before the plants go completely dormant and the old flower spikes turn brown. They can be lifted and divided every three to five years, which will revitalise the original clump and give you new plants to grow elsewhere. The genus was named after the Greek mythological character Achilles, as according to legend, Achilles’ soldiers used Yarrow to treat their wounds.

Rudbeckia require ground which is moist and well-drained throughout their growing season. They prefer full sun or partial shade and grow in all types of ground from clay to sandy soils. Water regularly during the summer months, Rudbeckia are low maintenance if the soil is naturally kept moist. Remove faded flower stems to prolong flowering. In autumn, cut back to a neat mound or, if you wouldn’t mind a few more Black Eyed Susan plants, let the last blooms go to seed for the birds.
