Health and Welfare of Brachycephalic (Flat-faced) Companion Animals A Complete Guide for Veterinary and Animal Professionals

Health and Welfare of Brachycephalic (Flat-faced) Companion Animals A Complete Guide for Veterinary and Animal Professionals

Health and welfare issues of brachycephalic (flat-faced) animals are one of the most pressing problems facing companion animals right now. Dogs in particular are suffering from a ‘brachycephalic crisis’ resulting from a perfect storm where predispositions to an array of health issues are amplified by a population boom for certain brachycephalic breeds such as the French Bulldog and Pug. But yet for many owners these dogs represent the perfect companion: endearing personas and cute looks in a socially desirable package. So where is the truth in all of this? This book will equip veterinary professionals animal welfare scientists breeders and owners with the fuller story about brachycephalic health and welfare. The first half of the book provides the context of how and why we are in this crisis offering in-depth historical social ethical communication nursing welfare epidemiological genetics and international perspectives. The second half shifts towards the clinical arena with chapters that cover the background diagnosis treatment and prevention of the many unique healthcare needs of brachycephalic animals. Cutting-edge knowledge is shared on a range of disciplines including respiratory disease ophthalmology dermatology dentistry neurology obesity reproduction and anesthesia. With twenty chapters written by world-leading experts lifetimes of experience and knowledge are condensed into the first book dedicated exclusively to brachycephaly in companion animals. This essential reference resource will inform challenge and stimulate; it will open your mind to new opportunities for you to improve the welfare of brachycephalic animals by your personal and collective choices and actions. But prepare to be surprised: you may just find that your views on brachycephaly in companion animals will be changed forever. | Health and Welfare of Brachycephalic (Flat-faced) Companion Animals A Complete Guide for Veterinary and Animal Professionals

Integrated Micro-Ring Photonics Principles and Applications as Slow Light Devices Soliton Generation and Optical Transmission

Integrated Micro-Ring Photonics Principles and Applications as Slow Light Devices Soliton Generation and Optical Transmission

Micro-ring resonators (MRRs) are employed to generate signals used for optical communication applications where they can be integrated in a single system. These structures are ideal candidates for very large-scale integrated (VLSI) photonic circuits since they provide a wide range of optical signal processing functions while being ultra-compact. Soliton pulses have sufficient stability for preservation of their shape and velocity. Technological progress in fields such as tunable narrow band laser systems multiple transmission and MRR systems constitute a base for the development of new transmission techniques. Controlling the speed of a light signal has many potential applications in fiber optic communication and quantum computing. The slow light effect has many important applications and is a key technology for all optical networks such as optical signal processing. Generation of slow light in MRRs is based on the nonlinear optical fibers. Slow light can be generated within the micro-ring devices which will be able to be used with the mobile telephone. Therefore the message can be kept encrypted via quantum cryptography. Thus perfect security in a mobile telephone network is plausible. This research study involves both numerical experiments and theoretical work based on MRRs for secured communication. | Integrated Micro-Ring Photonics Principles and Applications as Slow Light Devices Soliton Generation and Optical Transmission

Problem-Solving Exercises in Green and Sustainable Chemistry

Problem-Solving Exercises in Green and Sustainable Chemistry

When confronted with a problem in science the way to proceed is not always obvious. The problem may seem intractable or there may be many possible solutions with some better than others. Problem-Solving Exercises in Green and Sustainable Chemistry teaches students how to analyze and solve real-world problems that occur in an environmental context and it encourages creativity in developing solutions to situations based on events that have actually taken place. The problems described in this book are relevant and stimulating in learning and understanding the principles of green and sustainable chemistry. They address various aspects of the field including: Toxicity Waste generation and disposal Chemical accidents Energy efficiency New policy development The final chapter contains proposed solutions to the presented problems and provides commentaries and references to relevant literature. This book also prompts students to become more comfortable with the idea of multiple correct answers to problems. It emphasizes the reality that green chemistry is about making practical decisions and weighing multiple factors that are often conflicting thus making it difficult or impossible to apply one perfect solution to a given situation. Problem-Solving Exercises in Green and Sustainable Chemistry prepares students to solve challenging problems whether as green chemists as architects designing energy-efficient buildings or as environmentally-conscious citizens.

Molecular Modeling Basics

Molecular Modeling Basics

Molecular modeling is becoming an increasingly important part of chemical research and education as computers become faster and programs become easier to use. The results however have not become easier to understand. Addressing the need for a workshop-oriented book Molecular Modeling Basics provides the fundamental theory needed to understand not only what molecular modeling programs do but also the gist of research papers that describe molecular modeling results. Written in a succinct manner using informal language the book presents concise coverage of key concepts suitable for novices to the field. It begins by examining the potential energy surface (PES) which provides the connection between experimental data and molecular modeling. It explores ways to calculate energy by molecular and quantum mechanics. It describes molecular properties and the condensed phase and shows how to extract and interpret information from a program output. The author uses hands-on exercises to illustrate concepts and he supplements the text with a blog containing animated tutorials and interactive figures. Drawn from the author‘s own lecture notes from a class he taught for many years at the University of Iowa this volume introduces topics in such a way that beginners can clearly comprehend molecular modeling results. A perfect supplement to a molecular modeling textbook the book offers students the hands-on practice they need to grasp sophisticated concepts. In addition to his blog the author maintains a website describing his research and one detailing his seminars.
