Pittosporum Tenuifolium Silver Queen for Sale Online UK

Pittosporum Tenuifolium Silver Queen for Sale Online UK

Pittosporum Tenuifolium shrubs are bushy evergreen shrubs with delicate looking grey-green leaves with white margins originating from New Zealand. They provide ornamental foliage and structure to the garden.  Pittosporum Tenuifolium Silver Queen is a variegated variety of these low growing pittosporum evegreens, popularly grown for their foliage and structure. Silver Queen has grey to green leaves that have a pretty white edging. From a distance Pittosporum Tenuifolium Silver Queen glows silvery-white. In the springtime bell-shaped purple flowers appear in small clusters. These are not big and showy but do produce scent that attracts pollinators. Seeds will follow these flowers providing food for wildlife. Pittosporum Tenuifolium Silver Queen will grow to a height of one and a half metres and spread over two metres unless you prune it to contain the spread. How Hardy Is Pittosporum Tenuifolium Silver Queen?Pittosporum Tenuifolium Silver Queen is frost hardy through most of the UK, but may struggle with foliage damage and stem dieback in consistently harsh temperatures, particularly if it’s placed in cold drying winds or water-logged areas. Silver Queen’s showy foliage lifts a sheltered mixed border and breaks up a clashing mix of summer blooms. Make sure you plant Silver Queen with plenty of room to grow as she can develop into a large shrub.Silver Queen’s leaves last a long time in cut flower arrangements and she can be pruned into a specimen shrub or even a medium-height hedge when several are planted together. Try placing a Pittosporum Silver Queen somewhere you can see her from a window in winter as the evergreen foliage gives a bare garden a colourful boost. All Pittosporum Tenuifolium plants need some shelter from cold winds. Direct sun will encourage leaf colour but it will tolerate partial shade too. A Silver Queen will grow best in loam, chalk and sandy soils of any pH, but it needs a well drained soil to avoid root rot. Little other care is needed once established. In the early years you will need to water your shrub regularly and a yearly application of mulch around the roots will boost its overall health. You can trim Silver Queen all year round to keep the shape tidy and maintain a neat outline. If you prefer a wild look, simply leave the shrub to grow naturally. The RHS have given Pittosporum Tenuifolium Silver Queen the award of garden merit for her attributes.

Elaeagnus Angustifolia Oleaster for Sale Online UK & Ireland

Elaeagnus Angustifolia Oleaster for Sale Online UK & Ireland

Elaeagnus Angustifolia, also known as Oleaster or Russian olive, is an incredibly tough tree which will survive almost any type of growing conditions, and will be especially successful in the most challenging climates in the UK!  Whether grown as a specimen plant in a sheltered city garden or as windbreak by the sea, Elaeagnus Angustifolia will come through with flying colours!Native to Russia and Iran, Elaeagnus Angustifolia has been grown in the UK since the 1500s. The thorny stems bear silver, fragrant leaves, and produce small white flowers with a honey scent in June, which are a valuable pollen source for bees. Silver-orange berries later appear in the autumn which, while edible, are mostly of value for attracting birds. A unique quality of the Oleaster is that its roots set nitrogen, feeding not just itself, but also other plants around them, making them a valuable companion planting.  Elaeagnus Angustifolia is hardy throughout the UK and northern Europe, growing quickly to a mature height of 3 metres and spread of 2 metres within 10 years. Oleaster will tolerate considerable pruning, and can even be cut right back to the ground. If planting Elaeagnus Angustifolia as a hedge, space plants 35-75 cm apart. You can use a high potassium fertilizer in August to help new growth mature before winter. Elaeagnus Angustifolia will tolerate almost any conditions, and in fact thrives in some of the toughest. It is an excellent choice for coastal plantings, as it can take cold, exposed positions and is tolerant to salt, as well as doing quite well in dry, sandy soil, although it will also grow in heavy clay soil, as well as loam. It grows best in full sun.  Oleaster can be used as a specimen plant in a small garden, where its silvery leaves can be used to great effect when combined with climbing plants such as roses or clematis, and where the scent of the foliage and flowers can be appreciated close up. It will thrive in a hot, dry spot such as a patch of gravel where little else will grow. On a larger property, Elaeagnus Angustifolia makes an effective security hedge, as its thorns will deter intruders, either animal or human, and can be employed as a windbreak to provide shelter for other, more delicate plants.  Elaeagnus Angustifolia is a great choice for gardens across the UK because of its resilience in difficult conditions, as well as its beautiful foliage and flowers. It has a place in gardens large and small!

Cydonia oblonga Champion Quince Tree for Sale Online UK

Cydonia oblonga Champion Quince Tree for Sale Online UK

Cydonia oblonga Champion, or Quince Tree Champion, has so many desirable qualities that it is difficult to list them all! From its delicious autumn fruits, to its lovely spring blossoms, and its small size suitable for any space, this lovely fruit tree will fit in anywhere! Cydonia oblonga was a favourite fruit tree in the ancient Mediterranean, where it was cultivated by the Greeks and Romans. The first records of Quince being grown in the UK are from 1275 when Edward I planted four at the Tower of London. Cydonia oblonga Champion was bred in the late 1900’s in the United States, and is one of the most dependable Quince Tree varieties. In early spring, the dark green, leathery leaves emerge, followed by the blossoms in late May into June. The pale pink single flowers, similar to apple blossoms, are scattered over the crown, followed by fruits which are green but turn a golden yellow in autumn. When placed in a bowl in the house, the fragrance of even one ripe quince will perfume the entire room.Hardy in most parts of the UK, Cydonia oblonga Champion will grow to a mature height and spread of just 2 metres in 5 to 10 years, but can easily be pruned in late winter to maintain a smaller size. Like most Quinces, Cydonia oblonga Champion is self-pollinating so you do not need to plant more than one variety.Plant Cydonia oblonga Champion in a sheltered position in full sun, in moist but well-drained sand, clay or loam soil with an acid to neutral pH. This variety will do well in very wet soils. Since it is not tolerant of salt, it should be protected from sea winds in coastal regions, but can be grown easily in cities, as it is very tolerant of pollution. As Cydonia oblonga Champion is deer-resistant, it can be grown without special protection in country locations. The small size and ornamental qualities of Cydonia oblonga Champion make it a lovely addition to an informal cottage or small garden, and since it will do well in wet soil, it can be planted next to a pond or stream. Cydonia oblonga Champion, like all Quince Trees, will give you not only the beauty of its spring blossoms, but a bountiful harvest of fragrant, ornamental fruit in autumn! Lots more to choose from in our fruiting trees section. Tip: Cydonia Oblonga is the family of fruiting quinces grown primarily for their fruit. The ornamental or flowering quinces are a different classification and known as Chaenomeles – e.g. Chaenomeles Superba Pink Lady.

A variety of Pittosporum Tenuifolium, Elizabeth is a variegated version of this family with a definitive pink margin to the leaves making for an interesting combination of shades wherever you choose to place it. It may be referred to as as tawhiwhi, kohuhu, and kohukohu.  Pittosporum Tenuifolium Elizabeth can grow to 2.5-4m in height and an equal spread at ultimate growth. It takes 10-20 years for this shrub to reach ultimate height and spread. Considered hardy to H4, care should be taken to avoid extremely cold temperature exposure. It is well suited to Coastal areas.Elizabeth prefers full sun to partial shade, with South, West, or East facing aspects along with a sheltered site. Try to avoid north or east winds so as to lessen leaf scorch. It does best in well-drained soils with good humus content for water retention. Pittosporum has a wide range of soil texture preferences, including sand, clay, chalk, or loam. It thrives in near neutral, slightly alkaline or slightly acid soil pH’s. Fagus Sylvatica or Common Beech Hedging for sale Online UK

Fagus Sylvatica or Common Beech Hedging for sale Online UK

Fagus Sylvatica or Common Beech TreeFagus Sylvatica (also known as the Common Beech or European Beech) is native to South Wales and the southern United Kingdom and belongs to the family of Fagaceae. This is a popular hedging variety of Fagus Sylvatica, which although deciduous, gets its new leaves early every year. In the autumn, its old leaves drop off very slowly, often remaining on the plant throughout the winter. These features make it suitable for hedging. In fact, beech is one of the most popular deciduous hedging plants in the UK. In the winter season we also have this plant available in bare root form. Fagus Sylvatica produces new foliage between March and April each year. The shape of the leaves are ovate. New leaves emerge in spring in hues of beautiful green-yellow. As the foliage matures over the summer, the leaves become a deeper green. In autumn, they turn reddish-brown. Fagus Sylvatica is monoecious, meaning it produces both male and female flowers, which it produces during late April and May. Female flowers grow in pairs and are green. Male flowers are in the form of catkins and drape elegantly from long stalks. After the flowering period, edible beech nuts are produced, which these days, are mainly used to feed livestock. Whole enriched oil-nuts start forming in autumn, around September. The leaves of common beech take some time to decay completely. Fagus Sylvatica can live for hundreds of years and is UK hardy for all regions of United Kingdom. Beech is wild-life friendly providing shelter and food for many species. It is not overly fussy about soil type but thrives in limestone or chalky soils. See also Purple Beech for Hedging. For mixed beech and hornbeam hedging, see also Hornbeam Hedging Carpinus Betulus which we have availabile in many sizes.
