Laburnum Anagyroides Sunspire or Laburnum Sunspire, is a new variety of an old garden favourite. Its smaller size and narrow form compared to the regular Laburnum makes it an ideal tree for smaller gardens where the standard variety may not fit!A deciduous tree, Laburnum is native to the mountains of central Europe, and was introduced to the UK in 1560, where it has remained popular ever since. Laburnum Anagyroides Sunspire, found in northern Italy and Croatia, combines the most desirable characteristics of the original with a more compact form. In late spring and early summer, the green leaves on the upright branches are hidden beneath 30 cm long racemes of fragrant golden-yellow flowers which are at first erect and then droop after a couple of weeks. They are followed by hanging clusters of seed pods that can be removed and disposed of. The oval leaves are a green to grey-green colour and remain attractive throughout the season. All parts of the plant are highly toxic if ingested.Hardy in all parts of the UK, Laburnum Anagyroides Sunspire will slowly grow to a mature height of 3 metres and spread of 1.5 metres. It will require little or no pruning to maintain its narrow, vase-shaped form, but remove dead or damaged branches in late winter or early spring.Plant Laburnum Anagyroides Sunspire in a sheltered or exposed location where it will receive morning sun and afternoon shade, in soil rich in humus and moist but well-drained. Once established it is drought-tolerant. It has little salt tolerance so is not suited to coastal regions, but will tolerate pollution so Laburnum Sunspire makes a good choice for small city gardens. Deer are not attracted to it, so it will be safe from grazing in country locations. Laburnum Anagyroides Sunspire will make a striking specimen planting as the focal point in a small lawn, where its narrow width and smaller height will not overpower the space. A row planted along a walkway would create a brilliant display when the flowers are in bloom. Tucked towards the back of a mixed border, a Laburnum Sunspire would be a bright column of yellow when in bloom, and an attractive backdrop to flowering plants the rest of the season. Laburnum Anagyroides Sunspire is ideal if you are in need of a brightly flowering small tree.

The Actinidia Kolomikta climber will bring not only the fragrance of its flowers to your garden, but most notably the striking variations of colour on the leaves will contribute considerable visual interest. It has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit for these desirable qualities.  Native to eastern Asia, the Actinidia Kolomikta Climber has been grown in the UK since the 1870’s, and is a favourite of gardeners for its variegated foliage. The heart-shaped, 15 cm long leaves are a deep purplish-green when they emerge in spring, and then turn a medium green, developing irregular patterns of silver white and then pink. Some leaves will turn completely pink, while others just have pink tips, creating an overall tapestry of green, pink and silver. Small, 1 cm white flowers appear from May to July, and have a pleasant fragrance. If male and female vines are planted together, the females will produce a crop of 2.5 cm long fruits in fall, similar to kiwi. However, the colour variations that are so desirable are more notable on male plants, and Actinidia Kolomikta is often grown for ornamental purposes only.Hardy in most parts of the UK, Actinidia Kolomikta will quickly climb up a wall or trellis to a final height and spread of 4-8 metres in 5 to 10 years. Prune in late winter to remove dead wood and shape the vine. It will need a trellis to wrap its stems around, and some stems will need to be tied to supports. Plant your Actinidia Kolomikta in full sun for best foliage colour, in a sheltered, south-facing exposure, in any well-drained fertile soil, preferably with a slightly acid to neutral ph. It is not susceptible to pests or diseases, but cats are even more attracted to it than to catmint, so make sure that young leaves are protected!Actinidia Kolomikta Climber will look stunning when allowed to spread out against an old brick wall, or when trained up into the crown of a tree. Its vigorous growth and dense foliage also make it a great choice for growing up and across an arbour or pergola, where its colourful foliage display and fragrant flowers will be much appreciated. Actinidia Kolomikta is a very desirable landscape plant, especially for its spectacularly coloured foliage. The green, pink and silver variegated leaves will create a striking display all through the season!

The British plant collector Ernest ‘Chinese’ Wilson first introduced the Prunus ‘Amanogawa’ to Europe in 1916. The small ornamental tree was dubbed ‘Amanogawa’ in Japanese which translates into ‘River in the Sky’. The moniker River in the Sky refers to the tree’s profusion of springtime blossoms that resemble the astronomical arrangement of the Milky Way. The Armanogawa is also commonly called the Japanese Flowering Cherry or the Flagpole Cherry tree. After its introduction, the Armanogawa quickly grew in popularity and was bestowed the Award of Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society in 1931. This Japanese cherry tree has a delicate appearance with an upright growth habit. Its canopy forms a column shape with extremely erect branches. The tree produces a canopy width of 2 to 5 meters. It is a relatively slow growing tree and usually takes around twenty years to reach a height of 5 meters. The tree’s petite size makes it a classic focal specimen for any garden. From mid-April to mid-May, the Armanogawa produces large clusters of shell-pink double blossoms that feature a pleasing fragrance. The flowers are delicate and can succumb to a late frost but the tree will suffer no harm if the mercury dips. Following flower production, the tree’s oval bronze leaves appear and quickly turn green. Each leaf measure 5 to 13 centimeters long and 2 to 7 centimeters wide with a serrated edge. In the autumn, the tree’s foliage turns brilliant hues of orange and red. The Armanogawa Cherry grows best in well-draining soil that contains ample organic material. Plant in full sunlight for best fall colours. When young, the tree usually benefits from staking to protect it from strong winds. Virtually care free, the Armanogawa requires no pruning to maintain its appearance. However, if pruning is desired it should be carried out in the late summer to give the pruning wounds ample time to heal before winter arrives.The show stopping beauty of the Armanogawa is undeniable. Its small size makes it perfect for any cottage or urban style garden setting. Once established, the tree is hardy and carefree.
