As the name suggests it originates from the higher parts of Japan and Korea and can live for 100 years so it is a good alternative to box, which can be killed by harsh winters. The black berries of Japanese Holly and the pale new leaves which take a couple of months to darken, create a pleasant contrast against the slightly curved darker leaves. Like all hollies Ilex Crenata has male and female plants but only the females form berries.
