This version is a cultivar of our native common hawthorn that’s seen growing in hedges and fields across the UK. It’s been bred to grow upright in a dense fastigiated form that reaches for the sky. Upright Hawthorn Pleached tree has recognisable lobed hawthorn foliage that emerges pale green and matures into autumnal tones of yellow and orange as winter approaches. In the spring months, this hawthorn variety produces masses of small white scented blossom that’s loved by our native pollinators. Once pollinated, blossom matures into fruits known as ‘haws’ that ripe to a glorious deep red and attract birds.
