Cortaderia Selloana. Pampas Grass Buy Online UK

Cortaderia Selloana. Pampas Grass Buy Online UK

Cortaderia Selloana Pumila - Pampas GrassOriginating from the South American Pampas – which gives this plant its name – Cortaderia Selloana is more commonly known as Pampas Grass. A really tough, virtually maintenance free plant, which can add drama and structure to your garden design. The flower spikes start to form during the summer months and when fully grown (around September time) the feathery flowers emerge. This dramatic arrival of this plumage occurs at a time of year when there is often little colour in the garden and looks spectacular. The Pampas Grass flowers are like golden or silvery manes which sway gently in the breeze. The flower plumes reflect the light beautifully, appearing to almost glow on bright autumn days. This particular cultivar, Cortaderia Selloana Pumila, is relatively compact and is often referred to as Dwarf Pampas Grass and will attain an overall height of around 2.5-3 metres with a maximum spread of 1.5 metres. This dwarf variety is more suitable for smaller or medium sized gardens. In its natural habitat, Pampas Grass is tough and grows on the wide open plains in full sun, it is the primary grass plant of South America. Cortaderia Selloana prefers a very well drained soil and will not thrive in soggy conditions. Give it a thorough watering when first planting and once established, it is very drought resistant and grows well in coastal locations. The shape and structure of Cortaderia Selloana makes it ideal for planting in a wide range of situations. Providing height and punctuation in the mixed border; the spiky leaves make it a useful plant at boundaries for intruder protection and it looks splendid when featured as a specimen plant. Planting Pampas Grass repetitively in clumps, or as an avenue, can create a very dramatic effect, especially where low-maintenance and drought resistance is a major factor. The flowers are prized for cut flower arrangements. Cortaderia Selloana Pumila has been awarded the RHS AGM – Award of Garden Merit, a good indicator for planting in UK gardens. You may be interested in our collection of ornamental grasses.

Betula Nigra Tree, River Birch Trees. Buy Online UK

Betula Nigra - also known as River Birch, Black Birch and Red Birch.A rather special variety of Birch tree, Betula Nigra is one of the few birches that will tolerate a hot spell and is an ornamental trees that will thrive in wet soil. This type of soil is usually reserved for Willow trees but there are other options and River Birch is a perfect fit. Originally found growing along river banks in the south eastern states of the US, Betula Nigra is right at home next to water.A graceful tree with slender branches, it is renowned for its exceptional bark. The bronze coloured bark is constantly in a state of flux. The shedding causes the wispy curling bark to roll back and reveal the creamiest trunk below and this contrast and texture are one of the tree's main assets.Like most Birch trees, the foliage is diamond shaped with a serrated edge, the leaves are a vibrant green when they emerge in the Spring along with fuzzy, yellow catkins around this time, which are another decorative bonus.Betula Nigra will grow into an impressive specimen tree reaching between 8-12 metres at maturity. This is an incredibly accommodating tree that will tolerate the heat or the wet and is happy growing in an urban situation. As with other types of Birch tree, River Birch also works well when planted as a mini 'forest' - the grouping of trees can really emphasise their beautifully textured bark.During the Autumn the leaves turn a delicious golden colour before falling to reveal the structure of the branches and again the beautiful bark takes centre stage.

Abies Concolor White Pine Tree. American Conifer Firs Buy UK

Abies Concolor White Pine Tree. American Conifer Firs Buy UK

Abies Concolor - The White Pine or White FirA beautiful conifer tree, the Abies Concolor tree, often known as the White Fir Tree or Concolor Fir has silvery blue glaucous foliage and is native to the mountains of western North America. It gets its name White Fir from the white colour of its bark. It has a classic Christmas tree shape and indeed the Concolor Fir is often used as a Christmas tree in America.Abies Concolor will grow steadily into a pyramid shape reaching 25 metres in height over ten to twenty years but it can be happily pruned at any height you require. Colour and height are the main reasons a gardener will choose a White Fir Tree. The Abies Concolor’s needles are a silvery-blue glaucous shade complemented by the white bark from which it draws its name. These colours are an interesting twist on the standard green fir tree.Branches fall naturally into regular horizontal fan arrangements and six to 12 centimetre sized cones develop in autumn. At first these are yellow or a light purple shade, later ripening into the traditional brown cones that release winged seeds.White Fir Trees are fully hardy throughout the UK. They are able to withstand heat as well as cold temperatures with ease if their roots are kept from waterlogged conditions.Abies Concolor make good specimen trees when they are planted out individually. In the winter months they can be decorated with outdoor lights for a traditional Christmas effect, or you can try growing one in a container to restrict its size and move it indoors for a short while. A living Christmas tree will happily move back outdoors after the festive season if it is watered well and kept away from radiators.Abies Concolor or the Concolor Fir can be used as a hedge or evergreen screening or ornamentally in a garden that needs some winter interest. Large specimens are good for landscaping designs often fulfilling both a practical and ornamental role at the same time.Large free-growing trees can reach a height of 25m but they can be kept at a manageable height by cutting the leader branch. There is no need to prune a Concolor fir other than to restrict its height because they retain a conical shape as they grow, however, keeping your white fir tree shorter will encourage bushiness.White Fir Trees perform best in rich well-drained soils that are slightly acidic but they will grow in most conditions provided the soil is not heavy clay. They appreciate full sun and mulch around their roots in spring time.Fir trees are not just for Christmas because they make interesting architectural shapes in a garden, create wildlife habitats and will boost your outdoor space with year round colour. It’s worth considering a beautiful white fir tree if you need to fill a large space or want to landscape a lengthy piece of lawn.

Cotinus Grace for Sale. Smoke Bush. Buy Online UK wide

Cotinus Grace for Sale. Smoke Bush. Buy Online UK wide

The Cotinus Grace, also referred to as the Smoke Bush, was obtained by crossing the  European smoke bush ( Cotinus coggygria) with the American smoke tree (Cotinus obovatus). A deciduous hybrid, the Cotinus ‘Grace’ was first developed in the 1970s at England’s Hillier Nurseries and quickly gained popularity around the world. Cotinus Grace is referred to as the smoke bush due to its fluffy pinkish plumes throughout the summer months. The Smoke Bush is a garden gem that provides year round visual interest. During the early spring months, its emerging oval-shaped foliage appears almost iridescent in shades of green with a slight red shimmering overcast. In the summer, fluffy pink flower plumes appear that give the shrub a smoky appearance. To many people, the flower plumes give the shrub the visual illusion of being engulfed in endless clouds of pink all summer. A deciduous bush, in the autumn the shrub’s foliage turns a bright red and orange before falling from the bush. The Cotinus Grace usually grows to a height of between 3 to 4.5 meters with a similar spread. Its ideal size makes it a favourite border shrub. When fully grown, the Smoke Bush forms a mounding appearance which also makes it a perfect focal point shrub in any cottage garden, formal landscape or urban setting.Plant the Cotinus ‘Grace’ in full sunlight for the best colouration, but it will grow in partial shade. Once established, the Smoke Bush is exceptionally hardy and can withstand periods of drought. Plant in a location with well-draining soil, although the Smoke Tree is tough and will grow even in infertile soil with rocky conditions. It is also deer resistant and suffers from very few pests or diseases. After planting, the Smoke Bush requires little care and needs no pruning. However, it will tolerate occasional trimming if desired to maintain shape and size. It can also be pruned into a tree shape with one central lead. The Cotinus ‘Grace’ is a showstopper in any landscape. Ideal companion plantings that will help highlight the eye catching shrub are Black-Eyed-Susan (Rudbeckia), Hydrangea, Mock Orange (Philadelphus), ornamental grasses or Japanese Maple. If you are seeking a dramatic and unusual plant to add to your garden landscape, then look no further than the Smoke Bush. See also another Cotinus varietiy with a deep purple colour - Cotinus Coggygria Royal Purple

Escallonia Apple Blossom. Shrubs and Hedges to buy online UK

Escallonia Apple Blossom. Shrubs and Hedges to buy online UK

Escallonia Apple Blossom is a low growing evergreen useful for low hedges and as ornamental shrubs.  Beautiful pink flowers resembling apple blossom in late summer / autumn months. It produces candy pink lush flowers between summer and autumn. The flowers resemble the shape of a tube with a white centre surrounded by deep green, small, and glossy leaves. With its sturdy stems, the plant grows gracefully forming a bushy and dense shrub. It can be planted alongside other perennials and shrubs. It can also be planted as a hedge in coastal climates to act as a windbreaker. Escallonia Apple Blossom grows exceptionally well in sunny spots. To plant it, dig a deep, large hole that can accommodate the plant’s root ball. Without disturbing the soil around the roots, take the plant out of its pot and place it at the bottom of the hole ensuring the plant’s crown is level with the ground. The roots need to be in direct contact with the soil while sitting at the same depth as it was in the container. Cover the hole with soil and gently firm it in before pouring water to allow the soil to settle around the roots. This plant is easy to care for and requires little maintenance. Mulch the plant during summer and remove dead blooms to encourage the plant to flower again.Water the plant regularly during the first weeks of planting and during summer. However, do not over water because as the plant continues to grow the roots go further down in search of moisture. Like other evergreens, Escallonia apple blossom requires pruning to maintain the shape of the plant. This plant can grow to four feet tall and is perfect for a small garden. The plant thrives in an open and sunny climate and works well with roses and other shrubs. In addition, it does well in acidic or mildly alkaline well-drained soil. The plant is resistant to salt spray, drought and wind, but does not do well in extremely cold and dry environments. Remove dead or damaged stems from the plant during early spring before the onset of fresh growth and then prune the plant. Low maintenance make Escallonia apple blossom ideal as a foundation or wall plant. The best time to plant it is during spring so that it has enough time to settle before winter. We ship Escallonia apple blossom plants throughout the UK and Ireland.

Tilia Cordata Small Leaved Lime Trees Full Standard. Buy UK

Tilia Cordata Small Leaved Lime Trees Full Standard. Buy UK

Tilia Cordata, or Small-leaved Lime, has long been a favourite of UK gardeners, as its hardiness, combined with considerable ornamental qualities, makes it ideal for a variety of landscapes. Our full standard specimens will fit in a variety of garden spaces!Tilia are a genus of deciduous trees grown for their small fragrant cup-shaped flowers and stately habit. Tilia Cordata or Small Leaved Lime has a spreading habit. In ancient times Tilia Cordata was a dominant species in the woodlands of the UK, and for many centuries has been used in UK gardens and landscapes. In spring, the glossy green heart-shaped leaves, up to 8 cm long, emerge, followed by the fragrant flowers of June. Creamy-white and drooping in clusters, they will attract large numbers of bees and butterflies! In autumn, clusters of nutlets form. The foliage of Small-leaved Lime turns yellow in autumn before falling, leaving the bare multi-stemmed form to add structure to the winter garden.Hardy throughout the UK and continental Europe, Tilia Cordata will grow to a height of 10 metres and spread of 6 metres in 25 years, with a possible mature height of 30 metres after 50 years. Little pruning of Small-leaved Lime is necessary, but if desired to create a hedge or screen, it can be done in late winter. If planting in a row or grouping, space plants 6-9 metres apart.Plant Tilia Cordata in full sun or partial shade in a sheltered position in moist but well-drained sand, clay or chalk soil with an alkaline to neutral pH. It makes an excellent planting in a wetter but not waterlogged soil, and should not be used in extremely dry conditions, although it will tolerate short periods of drought. It is tolerant of salt, so can be planted in coastal regions, and being extremely tolerant of pollution, will thrive in city locations. As they are eaten by deer, Small-leaved Lime trees may need protection in country gardens. Our multi-stemmed Tilia Cordata can be used to create a large screen or wind break, which can be pruned to size or left to grow into a spectacular boundary to a large property. One specimen will be a striking focal point in a large lawn. This ancient forest tree makes a good addition to a woodland or wildlife garden.Tilia Cordata, with its roots deep in ancient Britain, is still an excellent choice for UK gardens. Our full standard trees can be used in mass plantings as ornamental and hardy additions to the landscape. See also Tilia Cordata Greenspire.
