Cydonia oblonga Champion Quince Tree for Sale Online UK

Cydonia oblonga Champion Quince Tree for Sale Online UK

Cydonia oblonga Champion, or Quince Tree Champion, has so many desirable qualities that it is difficult to list them all! From its delicious autumn fruits, to its lovely spring blossoms, and its small size suitable for any space, this lovely fruit tree will fit in anywhere! Cydonia oblonga was a favourite fruit tree in the ancient Mediterranean, where it was cultivated by the Greeks and Romans. The first records of Quince being grown in the UK are from 1275 when Edward I planted four at the Tower of London. Cydonia oblonga Champion was bred in the late 1900’s in the United States, and is one of the most dependable Quince Tree varieties. In early spring, the dark green, leathery leaves emerge, followed by the blossoms in late May into June. The pale pink single flowers, similar to apple blossoms, are scattered over the crown, followed by fruits which are green but turn a golden yellow in autumn. When placed in a bowl in the house, the fragrance of even one ripe quince will perfume the entire room.Hardy in most parts of the UK, Cydonia oblonga Champion will grow to a mature height and spread of just 2 metres in 5 to 10 years, but can easily be pruned in late winter to maintain a smaller size. Like most Quinces, Cydonia oblonga Champion is self-pollinating so you do not need to plant more than one variety.Plant Cydonia oblonga Champion in a sheltered position in full sun, in moist but well-drained sand, clay or loam soil with an acid to neutral pH. This variety will do well in very wet soils. Since it is not tolerant of salt, it should be protected from sea winds in coastal regions, but can be grown easily in cities, as it is very tolerant of pollution. As Cydonia oblonga Champion is deer-resistant, it can be grown without special protection in country locations. The small size and ornamental qualities of Cydonia oblonga Champion make it a lovely addition to an informal cottage or small garden, and since it will do well in wet soil, it can be planted next to a pond or stream. Cydonia oblonga Champion, like all Quince Trees, will give you not only the beauty of its spring blossoms, but a bountiful harvest of fragrant, ornamental fruit in autumn! Lots more to choose from in our fruiting trees section. Tip: Cydonia Oblonga is the family of fruiting quinces grown primarily for their fruit. The ornamental or flowering quinces are a different classification and known as Chaenomeles – e.g. Chaenomeles Superba Pink Lady.

Japanese Acer Palmatum Japonicum Aconitifolium Tree, For Sale UK

Pleached Bay Trees Pleached Lauris Nobilis for Sale Online

Pleached Bay Trees Pleached Lauris Nobilis for Sale Online

Laurus Nobilis is the popular bay leaf tree that holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit. This pleached tree version creates an ideal evergreen screen above the fence level. Bay trees are native to southern Europe and thrive here in many forms including the pleached, full standard and shrub form for hedging.  Our pleached trees have long clear stems with the crowns trained flat (laterall) on square bamboo support frames. As the tree matures the crown will fill out into a cube. Pleached bay trees are excellent screens as they block the view from a neighbour’s upstairs window, but the bare trunk keeps your garden uncluttered. If you’d preferred a leafed stem, try our pleached bay screens. The leaves of our pleached bay tree are narrowly ovate, leathery and especially tactical. When rubbed they have a distinctive warm and delicious fragrance. Bay is a staple herb typically added to Mediterranean dishes to add a rich, deep flavour. Bay trees hold onto their leaves all year-round, and in spring small greenish-yellow flowers appear in dense clusters which are not particularly noticeable to us but are loved by pollinators. The RHS have also given Laurus Nobilis the Plant for Pollinators tag because it’s so attractive to bees and butterflies. Following the flowers, Lauris Nobilis produce small black glossy berries that attract birds.Height and Spread of Laurus Nobilis Pleached TreesPleached bay trees can reach 8-12 metres in height and 8 metres in width but are easily kept smaller with a twice-yearly trim. How Hardy Are Laurus Nobilis Pleached TreesPleached bay trees are hardy throughout most of the UK down to temperatures of minus 10 if the roots are well-drained. They enjoy hot weather and have strong pest resistance. How To Use Laurus Nobilis Pleached TreesPleached trees are often used as above fence line screening to get the ‘hedge on stilts’ effect. They’ve been used for hundreds of years in formal gardens but have become popular in small modern gardens as their clear stem leaves room in compact spaces and their cubed crown forms a contemporary shape.Plant pleached bay trees to block out the neighbours and create shady spaces. For a hedge-line without gaps plant so the frames are just touching. You can also use pleached bay trees to create tunnels in larger spaces and as an unusual cubed specimen tree. Don’t forget to add a leaf or two to your pasta dishes and stews. How To Care For Laurus Nobilis Pleached TreesPleached bay trees will grow in most soils of any pH, including chalk. The soil should be moist but well-drained and preferably sited in a sunny spot as these are sun-loving trees.Dig out a hole one third wider than the root ball and as deep as the soil mark on the tree’s stem. Plant it up with plenty of good quality compost and water regularly until they are established. Once planted, all you will need to do is trim them once or twice a year to maintain the form and tie in any new shoots. Any shoots overgrowing the framework should be clipped off. There is no need to remove the bamboo framework unless you want to. It’s best to wait until the branches are sufficiently mature to maintain the shape.Other forms of Lauris Nobilis include Full Standard Bays, Bay Topiary Lollipop, Twisted Stem Bay Trees and Topiary Bay Cones.

Corylus Rode Zellernoot Red Leaved Hazel Tree for Sale Online

Corylus Rode Zellernoot Red Leaved Hazel Tree for Sale Online

Corylus Rode Zellernoot or Red Leaved HazelIf you are looking for a productive and beautiful native hedge or shrub then it’s worth considering Corylus Rode Zellernoot - the Red Leaved Hazel. This stunning hazel hybrid produces edible nuts and glorious foliage. The full botanical name is Corylus Avellana Rode Zellernoot. It is a hybrid of Corylus Maxima and the common hazel Corylus Avellana. Rode Zellernoot means ‘red nut’ which refers to its leaf colour. Red Leaved Hazel is a decorative deciduous shrub that produces new red leaves in spring each evenly spaced along its fine, whippy branches. These serrated red leaves grow larger than the common hazel and mature into a bronze-green during the summer months before falling in the autumn. In summer, after the foliage is established, Red Leaved Hazel produces catkins. The male catkins are yellow-green and the female are a much smaller red catkin. Edible oval-shaped hazelnuts begin to appear in late summer to early autumn. The nuts are hidden inside red-toned husks with only the top peeping out. The nuts are particularly tasty and attractive to wildlife. How Hardy Is Corylus Rode ZellernootThe Red Leaved Hazel is extremely hardy, its parents being native to the UK. It will survive our winters and wet conditions, although young plants may need protection from harsh, drying winds for the first few years. How To Use Corylus Rode ZellernootAll hazels provide shelter and food for wildlife, particularly when grown as part of a hedgerow. This makes it an attractive hedging option for a wildlife garden. Hazel manages well in coastal and urban areas too. Corylus Rode Zellernoot will produce lots of new growth each year, reaching a maximum height of 3-4 metres, but it can be cut back in winter to maintain its size and shape.Corylus Rode Zellernoot varies from other varieties of hazel in that its foliage is a brighter red than its cousins, and its stems run straight to form a tight hedgerow, unlike Corylus Avellana Red Majestic which is an attractive red shade but has corkscrew branches.  How to Care For Corylus Rode ZellernootHazelnuts are among the easiest nuts to grow and they take up much less space than you would think. The Hazelnut family includes Corylus Avellana which is the common hazel and closely related filberts and cobnuts. All members of the Hazel family produce showy catkins in spring (these are male) which pollinate the very small flowers (female).  If you want to create a hedge in larger spaces, place your hazels four metres apart and reduce their height to encourage bushiness. Hazelnuts are very hardy being tolerant of cold and wet conditions. It will prefer a rich, loamy soil but will grow well in chalky and clay conditions provided it’s not water-logged. To ensure a maximum supply of nuts, it is best to plant at least 2 hazel trees (of any variety) as they are wind pollinated.Corylus Rode Zellernoot is as highly valued for its decorative display of changing leaves and showy catkins as it is for the tasty hazelnuts. If you want to grow a crop of nuts for autumn, help wildlife and create a beautiful display the Red Leaved Hazel is for you.
