Methods of Protein Separation - - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

Methods of Protein Separation - - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

This open-end treatise on methods concerning protein separation had its beginning in an American Chemical Society symposium entitled "Con temporary Protein Separation Methods" which was held in Atlantic City, New Jersey in September 1974. The purpose of the symposium-and subse quently of the present work-was to review the available modern techniques and underlying principles for achieving one of the very important tasks of experimental biology, namely the separation and characterization of proteins present in complex biological mixtures. Physicochemical characterization was covered only as related to the parent method of fractionation and there fore involved mostly mass transport processes. Additionally, the presentation of methods for gaini. ng insight into complex interacting protein profiles was considered of paramount importance in the interpretation of separation patterns. Finally, specific categories of proteins (e. g. , chemically modified, deriving from a specific tissue, conjugated to different moieties, etc. ) require meticulous trial and selection andjor modification of existing methodology to carry out the desired separation. In such cases, the gained experience provides valuable guidelines for further experimentation. Although powerful techniques exist today for the separation and related physicochemical characterization of proteins, many biological fractionation problems require further innovations. It is hoped that the description in the present treatise of some of the available separation tools and their limitations will provide the necessary integrated background for new developments in this area.

Payer, Provider, Consumer: Industry Confronts Health Care Costs - R.h. Egdahl - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

Payer, Provider, Consumer: Industry Confronts Health Care Costs - R.h. Egdahl - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

With this first monograph, Springer-Verlag launches an unusual publishing venture. The purpose of the Springer Series on Industry and Health Care is to explore in depth the current and potential future role of industry both management and labor in all private sector enterprises-as a financer of health care benefits, as a provider of health care services, and as an extremely influential "consumer" of health care. The assumption behind the series is that private industry has the capabil ity, as an alternative to increased government intervention, to effect major change in the health care delivery system and is beginning to show evidence of exercising that influence. The subject matter covered by the series crosses boundaries between disciplines and specialities-occupational medicine, medical care, public health, economics, business administration, law, public policy, medical sociology-and arises in disparate arenas-labor-manage ment relations, corporate negotiations with insurance carriers, physician patient interactions, public policy, and politics. The Springer Series will draw much of its material from interdisciplinary working conferences, will analyze and synthesize the discussions, add timely background material, and be published within no more than six months of the conferences on which they build. The series will consist of four monographs a year and two volumes of background papers.

Recent Advances in Schizophrenia - - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

Recent Advances in Schizophrenia - - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

I am honored to introduce readers to this extraordinary volume, the first in the annual International Perspectives Series: Psychiatry, Psychology, and Neurosciences. This particular volume on the Recent Advances In Schizophrenia stems from the Third Annual Pennsylvania Conference on Schizophrenia, held in March, 1988. At that international meeting, some of the most esteemed researchers in the field surveyed our current under standing of schizophrenia. Collectively, their presentations capture the excitement of a research field launching into a stage of rapid worldwide advancement. The last decade has seen an enormous refocusing of scientific effort on schizophrenia, directed, in large measure, by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Our understanding of this mysterious, disabling disorder in all its diversity has been enhanced by a host of technologies, including new neuroimaging techniques, cognitive psychology, molecular genetics, and anatomical, biochemical, and molecular neuropathology. The resulting growth spurt in our knowledge constitutes the essence of the conference and of this volume. As the following pages amply docu ment, it has been a decade of great progress, one in which we can take great pride. The science of our field has matured to the point that a major research thrust is now feasible-one likely to have enormous benefits for schizophrenic patients and their families. It is a very exciting time to be in this field and to participate in accelerating its advances.

A Practical Guide to Head Injury Rehabilitation - Michael D. Wesolowski - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

A Practical Guide to Head Injury Rehabilitation - Michael D. Wesolowski - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

Behavioral neuropsychology presents at once achallenge and an opportunity for the field ofbehavior analysis. A great diversity of problem areas-including education, classroom management, child rearing, retardation, and industry have been treated effectively by the behavior analytic approach, which has traditionally and quite deliberately chosen to deemphasize physiology and cognitive variables. Yet brain injury, by its nature, entails neurological insult that is often closely related to specific cognitive dysfunctions. The challenge for behavior analysis is to develop effective treatments for a disorder with such clearly defined tripartite characteristics. The opportunity exists for be havior analysis to expand its conceptual basis as well as to provide benefits to patients otherwise despairing of assistance. Case histories demonstrate over 20 years of successful applications of behavior analysis to brain-injured in dividuals, indicating that some applications are possible, but are these reports notable exceptions or the harbingers of a new general therapeutic approach? The present book describes an overall focused behaviaral program far dealing with the diversity of brain injury problems in a general brain injury rehabilitation setting. The authors describe what types of neurological damage are associated with specific types of cognitive/emotional dysfunction and in turn with specific types ofbehavioral dysfunction, thereby demonstrating how the choice ofbehavioral treatment is guided by the neurological and subjective assessment. The result is a conceptually unified approach. The distinctive value of this book lies in the detail as well as the pro grammatic guidelines for actual implementation ofthis behavioral approach.

Resilience in Children, Families, and Communities - - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

Resilience in Children, Families, and Communities - - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

Despite the numerous benefits derived from major technological and medical innovations of the past century, we continue to live in a world rife with significant social problems and challenges. Children continue to be born into lives of poverty; others must confront daily their parent’s mental illness or substance abuse; still others live amid chronic family discord or child abuse. For some of these children, life’s difficulties become overwhelming. Their enduring trauma can lead to a downward spiral, until their behavioral and emotional problems become lifelong barriers to success and wellbeing. Almost no one today would deny that the world is sometimes an inhospitable, even dangerous, place for our youth. Yet most children—even those living in high-risk environments—appear to persevere. Some even flourish. And this begs the question: why, in the face of such great odds, do these children become survivors rather than casualties of their environments? For many decades, scholars have pursued answers to the mysteries of resilience. Now, having culled several decades of research findings, the editors of this volume offer an in-depth, leading-edge description and analysis of Resilience in Children, Families and Communities: Linking Context to Practice and Policy . The book is divided into three readily accessible sections that both define the scope and limits of resilience as well as provide hands-on programs that families, neighborhoods, and communities can implement. In addition, several chapters provide real-life intervention strategies and social policies that can be readily put into practice. The goal: to enable children to develop more effective problem-solving skills, to help each child to improve his or her self-image, and to define ways in which role models can affect positive outcomes throughout each child’s lifetime. For researchers, clinicians, and students, Resilience in Children, Families and Communities: Linking Context to Practice and Policy is an essential addition to their library. It provides practical information to inform greater success in the effort to encourage resilience in all children and to achieve positive youth development.

Health Impact Assessment in the United States - Marla Orenstein - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

Health Impact Assessment in the United States - Marla Orenstein - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

A new public policy initiative is proposed, or a large-scale construction project. What is its potential impact on the health of the population? Are there adverse effects to address, health benefits to be promoted, some combination of both? A Health Impact Assessment (HIA) is a cross-disciplinary means of answering these and other complex questions, so programs, projects, or policies can be adjusted accordingly. Health Impact Assessment in the United States analyzes the goals, tools, and methods of HIA, and the competencies that are central to establishing best practices. It sets out the core principles that differentiate HIA from environmental and similar assessments, fleshing them out with case examples from the U.S. and abroad. Details of each step of the HIA process take follow-through into account, giving readers insights into not only collecting and evaluating data, but also communicating findings effectively to decision-makers and stakeholders. The book''s expert coverage includes: - The importance of HIA to policy development. - Introduction to public health, community planning, and health assessment. - Overview of the core concepts of HIA, with illustrative examples. - Step-by-step guide to conducting an HIA, from screening to evaluation. - Emerging technologies shaping HIA tools and procedures. - Appendices featuring sample assessment sections and other resources. The HIA has an increasingly vital place in the future of health-related policy, making Health Impact Assessment in the United States a valued manual and critical ideabook for students and practitioners in public health, public policy, urban planning, and community planning. "This book charts the growth of HIA in the United States, and provides invaluable guidance on conducting HIAs and utilizing their results. Very highly recommended." Howard Frumkin, MD, DrPH, Dean, University of Washington School of Public Health "This new book by three internationally recognized leaders in the field provides a practical guide to using this tool to identify important but often unrecognized opportunities and risks for health created by decisions in transportation, housing, energy, and other sectors." Aaron Wernham, Director of the Health Impact Project , a collaboration of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and The Pew Charitable Trusts. "This book makes an important contribution to the health impact assessment field and is a great resource for practitioners, researchers and students... it helps the reader to not only understand HIA but to do it." Ben Harris-Roxas, Conjoint Lecturer, Centre for Primary Health Care and Equity, University of New South Wales; Health Section Co‐Chair, International Association for Impact Assessment; Consultant, Harris‐Roxas Health. " Health Impact Assessment in the United States is an important resource... helping to uncover hidden causes of health inequities in proposals and identifying potential solutions before the proposals are implemented."
