Human Health Benefits of Plant Bioactive Compounds - - Bog - Apple Academic Press Inc. - Plusbog.dk

Focusing on the importance of functional foods and their secondary metabolites for human health, this volume presents new insights with scientific evidence on the use of functional foods in the treatment of certain diseases. The plants covered and their bioactive compounds are easily accessible and are believed to be effective with fewer side effects in comparison with modern drugs in the treatment of different diseases. The plants contain chemical compounds that can modify and modulate biological systems, eliciting therapeutic effects. Some plants and derived products mentioned include black carrot, olive oil, citrus peel, grapes, candy leaf, cereals and grains, and green and black tea. The volume is divided into four sections that cover these topics: - Functional foods for human health: the available sources, biochemistry, structural composition, and different biological activities, especially antioxidant activity. - Pharmacological aspects of fruits and vegetables: the extraction of bioactive molecules, phytochemistry, and biological activities of a selection of plants. - Pharmacological aspects of natural products: bioactive compounds, structural attributes, bioactivity of anthocyanin, piceatannol, and a review of the ethnobotany and medicinal properties of green and black tea. - Pharmacological aspects of cereals and grains: the health benefits of flaxseed, wheatgrass juice, and use and therapeutic potential as supplements for disease management.

The functional foods market represents one of the fastest growing and most fascinating areas of investigation and innovation in the food sector. This new volume focuses on recent findings, new research trends, and emerging technologies in bioprocessing: making use of microorganisms in the production of food with health and nutritional benefits. The volume is divided into three main parts. Part I discusses functional food production and human health, looking at some newly emerged bioprocessing technological advances in the functional foods (chocolates, whey beverages) in conjunction their prospective health benefits. Part II, on emerging applications of microorganism in safe food production, covers recent breakthroughs in food safety in microbial bioprocessing. Chapters discuss spoilage issues, harmful/pathogenic microorganisms, genetically modified microorganisms, stability and functionality, and potential of food-grade microbes for biodegradation of toxic compounds, such as mycotoxins, pesticides, and polycyclic hydrocarbons. Chapters in Part III, on emerging scope and potential application in the dairy and food industry, explore and investigate the current shortcomings and challenges of the microbially mediated processes at the industrial level. The editors have brought together a group of outstanding international contributors at the forefront of bioprocessing technology to produce a valuable resource for researchers, faculty, students, food nutrition and health practitioners, and all those working in the dairy, food, and nutraceutical industries, especially in the development of functional foods.

Internet of Things for Agriculture 4.0 - - Bog - Apple Academic Press Inc. - Plusbog.dk

This new book provides an insightful look at the varied and exciting uses and applications of Wi-Fi and the Internet of Things in agriculture. With internet-enabled communications becoming more widely available, farms and agricultural establishments can take advantage of these new technologies for a wide range of farm operations, such as crop management, farm vehicle tracking, livestock monitoring, storage monitoring, and more. The collected data from these devices can be stored in the cloud system or server and accessed by the farmers via the internet or mobile phones. This book shows the many benefits to farmers from applying IoT, including better utilizing information for monitoring crops, optimizing water use, planning effective fertilization strategies, and saving time and reducing the operation expenses. Topics include using IoT for vertical farming, IoT-based smart irrigation system, landslide susceptibility assessment, automated aeroponics systems, crop survival analysis, and more. The volume also considers the challenges of IoT in agriculture, such as the requirements of applications of wireless sensor networks, the threat of attacks and the detection of vulnerabilities in wireless sensor networks, and more. Internet of Things for Agriculture 4.0: Impact and Challenges provides a better understanding of the time- and resourcing-saving benefits of wireless sensors and remote monitoring devices in agriculture. The volume will be useful for those involved in agricultural operations as well as scientists and researchers, and faculty and students in agriculture and computer and information science engineering.
