Neu | The Pencil Perfect | Weaver, Caroline und Klanten, Robert und Ehmann, Sven und Fenwick, Oriana

The Pencil Perfect is the tangible tale of the pencil: a utensil that crafts its own story as humans use its sharpened point to write their own. Intimate and individual, pencil and paper are a personal touch in a digital age, for this small, everyday object brings us back to the tangible and the traditional. The Pencil Perfect takes its namesake's four simple ingredients - wood, graphite, clay, and water - and narrates a tale of worldwide influence and innovation.Caroline Weaver, pencil connoisseur and CW Pencil Enterprise Shop owner, composes texts that extol the nuanced influence of her beloved and humble implement. Illustrations exclusively drawn for The Pencil Perfect by Oriana Fenwick, an artist from Zimbabwe who works with fine details and intense realism, pair with Weaver's words to present a story that is both endearing and enlightening. Through profiles of pencil makers, anecdotes about famous writers' favorite pencils, and essays about the surprising role of pencils in world history and culture, the chronicle of a modest but mighty tool unfolds. Follow the charming contrivance as it guides the course of early communication in the Scientific Revolution, the American Revolutionary War, the Anglo-French War, and the French Revolution: it is a historical journey and a captivating memoir. See how its past contemporarily compares with its use and appearance today - from the Blackwing 602 to novelty ferrules. The development of cultures and communities is laid bare within the timeline of this slender entity. The Pencil Perfect immortalizes the biography of an inanimate object within its pages for a future cast of historians, writers, and curious minds. Caroline Weaver is a life-long pencil obsessive who owns a shop dedicated solely to wood-cased pencils, new and old, from all over the world in New York City. As a child she coveted a set of Caran d'Ache Prismalo colored pencils and proudly sharpened six early-2000s-era black Ticonderogas before school each day. From there, her love of the pencil and knowledge of the subject flourished. After traveling the world in search of the finest pencils still in production, she opened her shop in 2015. Caroline lives in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan and has a tattoo of a pencil on her forearm. von Weaver, Caroline und Klanten, Robert und Ehmann, Sven und Fenwick, Oriana

Craftsmanship is an expression of quality, passion, and mindset. This book is a showcase of crafted products created by small manufacturers. Craftsmanship is in more demand than ever and small manufacturers are experiencing an overwhelming renaissance. We are increasingly looking for products that last and have their own histories; things that meld form, function, and emotion into a compelling entity. This desire will continue to shape our attitudes toward consumer and luxury goods as well as innovation for the foreseeable future. Today, there are already many people who are not concerned with a logo, chasing the next trend, or contributing to a disposable society. They would rather seek objects of real value and own things with which they can truly identify. The Craft and the Makers showcases savvy businesses that are choosing to focus on craftsmanship and aiming to create things with a soul. A decisive role is played by melding tradition and innovation-from the raw materials used to the finished product. The book introduces small enterprises as well as the personalities that drive them. These artisans are using their skills to produce handicraft that meets the highest standards. Whether furniture, porcelain, or leather goods, all of the products featured here offer today's true luxury: the perfect fusion of creativity and craftsmanship that results in quality and durability. Reflecting this spirit, every page is a testament to the products created with heart that are much more than a sum of their parts.

With its picture-perfect terrace houses, enviable cache of cultural hotspots and more sleek coffee shops than you can shake a bag of finely ground beans at, it's little wonder that Melburnians regularly claim their bayside city to be the most liveable in the world. Add to the mix a first-rate food scene and an abounding wine region on its doorstep and you may just find yourself agreeing with the Melburnians loving their city. The Monocle Travel Guide to Melbourne will lead you down our favourite laneways, drop by the cutting-edge galleries shaking up the city's art scene and show you where to marvel at modernist architecture. We've also rounded up the independent retailers stocking the most covetable Aussie-made take-homes and sifted through the city's cafés, restaurants and bars to find the finest establishments in which to order a perfectly poured flat white, top-notch tucker and a light and peppery glass of pinot noir. Melbourne's weather may be erratic at best - the old adage of the city cycling through four seasons in one day is one to be heeded - but we'll give you plenty of reasons to hit the streets come rain, shine or hammering hail. The magazine Monocle covers the world with its network of bureaus in New York, Toronto, Zurich, Hong Kong, Istanbul, Tokyo, and Singapore. It also employs more than 30 dedicated correspondents-in cities from Bangkok to Bogotá, São Paolo to Stockholm-as well as a team of on-the-road reporters based out of its headquarters in London. This team's deep understanding of cities and all they have to offer has now been compiled in The Monocle Travel Guide Series. von Pickard, Joe;
